An ECU uses a map or the like prepared in advance to calculate discharge allowable power indicating electric power that can be discharged from a power storage device. When the running mode is at the CD mode and an engine is stopped, the ECU increases the discharge allowable power to a predetermined value. Furthermore, even when the running mode is at the CS mode or even when the engine is operating, the ECU increases the discharge allowable power when a catalyst device provided at an exhaust pipe of the engine is currently warmed up.

To provide a playback device that plays back a content recorded in an optical disc in conjunction with execution of an application supplied by a server. The playback device includes a disc region code detection unit operable to detect a region code from the optical disc; an application region code estimation unit operable to estimate a region code assigned to the application based on an address of the server; a restriction unit operable, if a region code assigned to the playback device, the region code detected from the optical disc, and the estimated region code assigned to the application do not match each other, to restrict the playback of the content in conjunction with the execution of the application.

A monitoring unit outputs a first current detection value having a relatively wide measurement range and a relatively short detection cycle and a second current detection value having a relatively high resolution, to a charging ECU. When charging power calculated using the first current detection value exceeds a predetermined limit value, the charging ECU controls a charger to reduce charging power (protection control). Further, the charging ECU controls the charger such that a power storage device attains a predetermined fully charged state based on charging power calculated using the second current detection value (full charge control).

A controller for a vehicle including an engine and a motor includes: a setting section that sets a command power based on a required power required by a user; and a control section that controls the engine and the motor so as to stop the engine and achieve the command power by using the motor before an engine starting condition is satisfied, and so as to start the engine and achieve the command power by using the engine and the motor after the engine starting condition is satisfied. The setting section changes the command power, at any point in time during a transition period from when the engine starting condition is satisfied to when the engine is started, so as to approach a value corresponding to the driving power, if a difference between the command power and the driving power is occurring or expected to occur during the transition period.

When the sum of a first state of charge of a first battery stack and a second state of charge of a second battery stack is large, a higher state of charge is selected as a priority state of charge. When the sum of first state of charge of the first battery stack and the second state of charge of the second battery stack is small, a lower state of charge is selected as the priority state of charge. A first coefficient and a second coefficient are set in accordance with the priority state of charge. The second coefficient is set so as to be lower than the first coefficient. The product of the first coefficient and the priority state of charge is added to the product of the second coefficient and the other state of charge, to thereby calculate a state of charge of a power storage system.
