Abstract:
A procedure and tools for quantifying surface cleanliness are described. Cleanliness of a target surface is quantified by wiping a prescribed area of the surface with a flexible, bright white cloth swatch, preferably mounted on a special tool. The cloth picks up a substantial amount of any particulate surface contamination. The amount of contamination is determined by measuring the reflectivity loss of the cloth before and after wiping on the contaminated system and comparing that loss to a previous calibration with similar contamination. In the alternative, a visual comparison of the contaminated cloth to a contamination key provides an indication of the surface cleanliness.
Abstract:
The tomato Cf-2 gene has been cloned and its sequence provided, along with the encoded amino acid sequence. DNA encoding the polypeptide, and alleles, mutants and derivatives thereof, may be introduced into plant cells and the encoded polypeptide expressed, conferring pathogen resistance on plants comprising such cells and descendants thereof. The Cf-2 sequence comprises leucine rich repeats and the presence of such repeats enables identification of other plant pathogen resistance genes. Homologies to Cf-9 reveal motifs useful in the identification of other plant pathogen resistance genes.
Abstract:
A system is disclosed that provides a goal based learning system utilizing a rule based expert training system to provide a cognitive educational experience. The system provides the user with a simulated environment that presents a business opportunity to understand and solve optimally. Mistakes are noted and remedial educational material presented dynamically to build the necessary skills that a user requires for success in the business endeavor. The system utilizes an artificial intelligence engine driving individualized and dynamic feedback with synchronized video and graphics used to simulate real-world environment and interactions. Multiple "correct" answers are integrated into the learning system to allow individualized learning experiences in which navigation through the system is at a pace controlled by the learner. A robust business model provides support for realistic activities and allows one or more users to experience real world consequences for their actions in one or more simulated environments and make decisions that entail realtime decision-making and synthesis of the educational material.

Abstract:
The present invention is of a mandrel bar assembly for a seamless pipe mill. The assembly includes a pair of tooling sections each having a tapered end, a reduced diameter portion axially inward of the tapered end adapted to be gripped by a retaining means of the mill, and a working portion adjacent the reduced diameter portion extending from the reduced diameter portion to the end opposite the tapered portion. The assembly includes a coupling for connecting the tooling sections together end-to-end with the tapered ends facing oppositely outward therefrom. An adapter is provided to cover the reduced diameter portion and provide a working surface thereon of one tooling section that is to be positioned as the lead end into the mill. When one tooling section wears the adapter can be removed and installed on the other tooling section, and the assembly is reversed end-to-end to use the other tooling section as the lead end, extending the useful life of the assembly.
Abstract:
Disclosed herein, among other things, is a stator winding temperature sensor. According to an embodiment, the sensor includes at least one sensing wire coil adapted to be connected to a stator. The sensor also includes a body, including a core material surrounding at least a portion of the sensing wire coil, and a laminate material over the core material. The body has a thickness adapted to protect the sensing wire coil. The sensor includes a lead wire adapted to connect to an external monitoring device. The sensing wire coil is electrically connected to the lead wire at a lead step portion of the sensor. In addition, the sensor includes a tab extending from the lead wire and encompassing the lead step. The tab protects the lead step and the sensing wire coil in a region where the sensor extends over an end of the stator.
Abstract:
A power plant control system determines an augmented operating parameter set point responsive to a life cycle cost (LCC) objective function responsive to a LCC model. The augmented operating parameter value may be responsive to an initial set point determined by a controls model and a performance indicator determined by a performance model. The power plant may include a thermal generator, such as a gas turbine or other fuel-burning generator, and the operating parameter may include firing temperature, fuel flow rate, steam pressure/temperature/flow rate, and/or another suitable operating parameter. An offer curve is generated responsive to the augmented operating parameter.
Abstract:
A subscriber of a telecommunication system has a plurality of associated telecommunication devices which are each contactable via a device-shared identification address. A first device can communicate with a telecommunications network. A second device can communicate with a packet-switched network and a circuit-switched network. A control system receives an incoming telecommunication request associated with an incoming telecommunication request directed to the address, which has been routed to the control system based on the address. A first control phase is initiated where a first outgoing telecommunication request is transmitted over the telecommunications network to the first device and an operation is performed to at least attempt to transmit a second outgoing telecommunication request over the packet-switched network to the second device. If the operation is deemed to be unsuccessful, a second control phase is initiated where a third outgoing telecommunication request is transmitted over the circuit-switched network to the second device.
Abstract:
An aircraft wing assembly, comprising a front spar, a rear spar, and upper and lower wing covers extending between the front and rear spars, wherein the upper and/or lower wing cover overhangs the rear spar and has a non-linear trailing edge profile forming an array of tabs and cut-outs. Also, a method of assembling the aircraft wing.
