    Abstract: An apparatus for pre-piercing billets includes a generally cylindrical container for receiving and supporting a generally cylindrical billet, a mandrel bar mounted for axial movement along the axis of the cylinder for penetrating the billet, and a bolster for engaging the billet during penetration of the billet by the mandrel bar, wherein the bolster includes a bolster pin which is axially movable along the axis of the container, the bolster pin having an end which contacts the billet during penetration of the billet by the mandrel bar such that the billet deforms about the end of the bolster pin. A movable support is carried by the mandrel bar toward the billet during advancement of the mandrel bar prior to pre-piercing the billet, the movable support being configured to enter the generally cylindrical container to engage a portion of the container so as to provide additional structural rigidity to the mandrel bar to resist deflection of the mandrel bar during penetration of the billet.

    Abstract: An indirect extrusion press and method of operating the press. The press includes a container with opposite axial ends and an axial cavity for receiving a billet. The container is mounted for aligning the axial cavity with the extrusion axis. A bolster is disposed adjacent one axial end of the container for blocking movement of a billet out of the cavity when a force is applied against the billet from the other axial end of the container. A ram is mounted on the side of the container adjacent the other axial end of the container for movement in the axial direction of the container. The ram has an axial passage therethrough aligned with the extrusion axis. A rotatable turret is mounted on the ram, and a hollow pressing stem is mounted on the turret. The turret is rotatable for placing the hollow pressing stem in a first position aligned with the extrusion axis, and in a second position off of the extrusion axis. When the hollow pressing stem is in the first position it communicates with the axial passage through the ram and can be moved axially, via the ram, to press a die through the cavity to extrude a billet to form an extrusion product which exits the container via the hollow pressing stem and the axial passage in the ram. When the hollow pressing stem is in the second position it permits other tooling to perform operations on the extrusion axis of the press.

The flexible backing may be a fabric of natural and/or synthetic fibre, e.g. hessian. The undercover may be secured to the flexible backing by the bituminous base binder. The aggregate may be a collection of crushed mineral particles, non-abrasive particles, e.g. rubber, or cork, or a synthetic decorative material. The undercover may be made of paper or flexible plastic.

[Class 51 (i).] In a flame tube boiler wherein successive explosive charges are delivered to the flame tube under pressure and ignited, the gaseous charges are drawn by a pump C, Fig. 1, from a carburetter A through non-return ball valves h and delivered by the pump through a non- return ball valve k and cooling-vessel E to a pipe m which, as shown in Fig. 3, delivers into water jacketed passages r, s provided respectively with a cartridge or coil w of wire gauze and sparking plug t. Exploded charges pass through the passage v to the flame tube 5 of the boiler 2. The gases exhaust through an external pipe 7, provided with a metal gauge silencer 8 to a jacket 6 surrounding one end of the boiler.     Abstract: 244,182. Paget, S. C. Sept. 13, 1924. Atmospheric gas and vapour burners; vaporizing-apparatus. - A succession of gaseous combustible charges is delivered under pressure by means of a pump to the fire tube or tubes of a boiler and combustion is maintained under pressure in the form of a series of explosions. As shown applied to a flame tube boiler H the flame tube G is connected to a pump A the piston B of which is driven by a connecting-rod B' and a crank B from a pulley rotated by a belt from a power shaft. At the upper end of its stroke the piston B opens a port F communicating with a supply pipe F for the gaseous or vaporized liquid fuel which is thus drawn in by the vacuum formed in the cylinder. The downward stroke of the piston compresses this charge and at the lower end of the stroke a plunger C integral with the piston B and carrying a packing ring C' opens ports which put the compressed charge into communication with a sparking plug C and an outlet pipe E rigidly connected to the flame tube G. The charge is thus ignited and the flame travels along the coiled tube G which is immersed in water in the boiler H, the hot products being exhausted to atmosphere at the further end of the flame tube. The pump A may supply air to a vaporizer or hot bulb while a small fuel pump delivers liquid fuel to the vaporizer &c. which is heated by any suitable means.

    Abstract: In a process for preparing, for paper making, fibrous materials of a soft and yielding nature such as members of the orders Zingiberace and Musace, of which hedychium coronarium, manila, and banana plants are mentioned as examples, the materials are treated with alkaline liquor under atmospheric pressure at a temperature which is high but below boiling point, and if the alkali treatment is not allowed to proceed too far, the matters altered by the alkali can be retained in the pulp as a natural sizing-material, a parchment-like grease-proof paper being obtained without the addition of the usual sizing-agents.
