    Abstract: 29,497. Schafer, W. Dec. 21. Harvesting-machines ; sheafing or binding apparatus.-In a machine for reaping and binding corn &c., means are provided to convey the corn without elevation to the binding-mechanism. The conical transport drum 8, Fig. 1, which is driven by gearing as shown from the shaft 27, Fig. 3, carries blades 9, pivoted on axes 52 in the hub 50, and also hooks 10 pivotally attached to the lower part of the hub, and provided with extensions and rollers 53 bearing on the fixed cam-disk 54 and pins or rollers 55 which bear on and turn the blades 9. The cam is adapted to make the hooks glide close to the cutting-mechanism 5, 6 and thereby gather the cut corn &c., which, by the action of the blades, is gradually inclined while the cut ends are elevated owing to the normal forward inclination of the axis 7 of the drum. At the rear of the machine, the hooks glide over the blades 9 and assist in throwing-off the corn at a time when the cut ends are tripped up by an adjustable stop 63 and butting-board 71, Fig. 2, so as to be delivered to the packing and binding devices 12, 13 which are driven by rotating shafts 60, 61 for packing and throwing out, and an oscillating shaft 62 for operating the needle, these shafts being driven from the shaft 27 by a bevel 56, Fig. 3, and chain and spur gearing. The stop 63 is adjusted for various lengths of corn &c. by a supporting-arm 65, which is turned about the axis 7 of the drum by a rod 66 and hand-lever 67, connected to the rod 66 by a ball joint, Figs. 4 and 7, a spring ratchet 68 being provided to fix the lever 67 in any position. The butting-board 71 is adjusted about the axis 72 at the same time as the stop 63 by the rod 69 and lever 70. The frame 1 of the machine is carried on two front wheels 3, 4 and a castor-wheel 2. For adjustment of the height of the frame, the large front wheel 4 is journaled in one end of a lever 14, Figs. 4 and 5, in the other end of which is pivoted an axis 15 of the frame. A lever 16, which is connected to the frame by a rod 17 and rigidly connected to the lever 18, is adjustably fixed in relation to the lever 14 by means of teeth 20 on the lever 14 and a pawl 19. A similar vertical adjustment is provided at the other wheel, an axle 21 with cranks 22 being provided, one of which is adjusted vertically in relation to the frame by a rod 23 connected to the axle of the large wheel 4. A cam 24 fixed to the support 25 of the counter knives is actuated by the head of the rod 23 to raise the knives when the frame is raised. The pivots 26 of the counter knives intersect the axis of the drum so that the knives can swing about the axis 7 and move about the pivots 26 at the same time. The knives 5 are carried on cross pins 43, 44, Fig. 3, to permit this movement and are oscillated, by a crank and connecting-rod 38, 39, about an axis 42 secured in a downwardly projecting part of the frame and coincident with the axis of the drum. All the movements of the machine are obtained from the shaft 27, Fig. 3, which is driven from the main wheel 4 by chain and spur gearing. One end of the shaft 27 is mounted in an eccentric sleeve bearing 34, which is oscillated by levers to throw one of the spur-wheels out of gear. The shaft 27 is flexible, or may be mounted in a pivoted ball bearing at the opposite end, to allow this movement. In a modification of the machine, Fig. 13, the cutting- device is of the usual construction. The transport blades 9 are pivoted to levers 73 which are pivoted to a plate 75 and have extensions 76 which bear on a cam-disk 77 designed to make the blades move along the knife. To give up the stalks to the guide-surface 78, the blades receive a turning movement by means of spur-wheels 79 and a lever and rack pivoted to the arm 73 and bearing on a second cam 82. The levers are connected by a spring 84 which presses them against their cams. The blades 9 are formed into prongs 86 at the broad ends, between which pass prongs 87 of the surface 78, to remove the stalks, which are conveyed to the binding-apparatus or to the side of the machine by a transport belt 88. One roller 89 of the belt 88 may be on the gear shaft 27 or situated higher so that the stalks have their cut ends elevated while the heads fall along the guide-surface 78. A low wall of sheet metal 90 and an upper wall 92 serve to guide the stalks along the knives to the guide-surface 78. Two projecting points 93 divide the corn to be cut.
