Abstract: Compounds of the formula where R and R1 represent hydrogen, R2 and R3 represent methyl or ethyl radicals, Z represents a saturated or unsaturated C2- 4 aliphatic radical, optionally substituted by chlorine, bromine, a carboxyl or alkoxy-carbonyl group and Z represents the anion of an inorganic or organic acid, are used as plant growth regulants for inhibiting the height of plants. The compounds may be applied as an aqueous solution to the soil or to the leaves of the plant, or admixed with conventional fertilizers. Examples describe the treatment of cereal plants with N-b -chloroethyl - N, N - dimethylhydrazinium chloride.ALSO:The invention comprises hydrazinium salts of the formula wherein R and R1 are hydrogen, R2 and R3 are methyl or ethyl radicals, Z is a saturated or unsaturated C2- 4 aliphatic radical optionally substituted by chlorine, bromine, a carboxyl or alkoxycarbonyl group and X represents the anion of an inorganic or organic acid, provided that R2, R3 and Z do not all simultaneously represent the same radical. The compounds in which X is halide may be made by reacting a N,N-dialkylhydrazine with an alkyl halide, which may contain other substituent groups. Haloalkylhydrazinium salts may be converted to other types of substituted hydrazines, e.g. by elimination of hydrogen halide or by nucleophilic aliphatic substitution. The compounds are used as plant growth inhibitors (see Division C1). Examples relate to various hydrazinium bromides and chlorides.
