Abstract: 1,154,699. Grafted isobutylene polymers. BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK A.G. 21 Oct., 1966 [23 Oct., 1965], No. 47232/66. Heading C3G. A 1,3-diene is grafted on to the reaction product of a halogenated isobutylene polymer with a Lewis acid. The diene is e.g. butadiene, isoprene or chloroprene; a mixture of a diene with styrene, α-methyl styrene or a vinyl ether such as ethyl, n-propyl, isobutyl or n-hexyl vinyl ether may be used. The isobutylene polymer, which is a homopolymer, or a copolymer of at least 80% isobutylene with butadiene, isoprene, styrene, α-methyl styrene or a vinyl ether, is halogenated conventionally. A list is given of suitable Lewis acids and of Ziegler- Natta catalysts which may be used for the polymerization. The graft polymers may he vulcanized with conventional agents and then compounded with fillers. In Examples 1 and 2 a brominated polyisobutylene is dissolved in toluene and reacted with AlCl 3 prior to grafting with butadiene and isoprene respectively, using Et 3 AlCl and cobalt (II) acetylacetonate as catalyst. Examples 3 to 18 describe processes in which a chlorinated isobutylene-isoprene rubber is dissolved in an n-hexane/toluene mixture and reacted with TiCl 4 , ZrOCl 2 , TiBr 4 , TiI 4 , AlBr 3 , HClO 4 , SnCl 4 , NbCl 5 , TaCl 5 , VCl 4 , MoCl 4 , palladium (II) hydrochloride, gold (III) hydrochloride, platinum (IV) hydrochloride or FeCl 3 and grafted with butadiene using AlEt 3 and cobalt (II) acetylacetonate as catalyst. In Example 19 a brominated isobutyleneisoprene rubber is dissolved in a p-diisopropyl benzene/pentane mixture and grafted with butadiene using AlBr 3 as the Lewis acid and AlEt 3 and chromium (III) acetyl acetonate as catalyst.

A moulding material comprises a polydiene and a phenolic stabilizer which is a reaction product of a phenol, a polydiene having a molecular weight of 500 to 20,000 and an olefin. In Examples 1-3 a mixture of styrene, ethylbenzene, and polybutadiene is polymerized in the presence of the reaction product of polybutadiene, o-cresol, and diisobutylene and the solid product is granulated. In Example 4 the reaction product of polybutadiene, phenol, and iso-octene is added to an already polymerized mixture of styrene and polybutadiene. The reaction products are prepared by reacting the ingredients in solution in the presence of such acidic catalysts as sulphuric acid and cation-exchanger in (H) + form.

Abstract: 1,146,653. Self-extinguishing polymeric compositions. BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODAFABRIK A.G. 7 July, 1966 [9 July, 1965], No. 30552/66. Headings C3C and C3P. A self-extinguishing composition consists of (a) a normally solid thermoplastic polymer of at least 50% by wt. of styrene which may be substituted, and less than 50% of at least one other copolymerizable compound having the group having intimately incorporated therewith (b) an organic bromide, having a plurality of bromine atoms attached to carbon atoms and the bromine atoms constituting more than 40% of the bromide, in such an amount that the composition has a bromine content of 0À1-5%, and (c) 0À01-5% of (a) of a polymer which is prepared from (i) a compound of formula where R 1 , R 2 , R 4 and R 5 are H, halogen or a C 1-4 aliphatic hydrocarbon radical and at least two of the above Rs are where R 7 is a C 1-4 linear aliphatic hydrocarbon radical and R 8 is H or R 7 , and R 3 and R 6 are H or halogen atoms; or (ii) a mixture of the above compounds and a compound of the same formula where R 1 is where R 7 and R 8 are as before and the remaining Rs are H or halogen atoms. The (a) polymer may be polystyrene, a copolymer of styrene and acrylonitrile together with optionally polybutadiene, or a polymer obtained by polymerizing styrene in the presence of polybutadiene. Polymer (c) may be prepared by dehydropolymerization of p- or m-diisopropylbenzene with optionally isopropylbenzene, or 1,2,4-tri- or 1,2,4,5-tetra-isopropylbenzene. The bromide (b) may be hexabromocyclododecane or tris - (2,3 - dibromopropyl) - phosphate. The composition may be made by dissolving the three components in methylene chloride or by extruding the three components, with optionally kaolin; or by polymerizing styrene in the presence of an aq. mixture of polyvinylpyrrolidone, sodium pyrophosphate, benzoyl peroxide and the above (b) and (c) components. The composition may also contain a foaming agent, e.g. pentane or methyl chloride, and may be formed into a foamed sheet or strand.

Abstract: 1,3-Dienes are polymerized in aqueous emulsion using conventional catalysts in the presence of a preformed polymer, the preformed polymer being a crystalline polyether, polyamide and/or polyurethane which contains at least one vinylidene group. The preformed polymer may be used in an amount of from 0.1 to 50% of the total of preformed polymer and monomers. The process may be carried out at 5 DEG to 50 DEG C., at a pressure of 1 to 20 atmospheres, in the presence of an emulsifier and/or regulator and to a conversion of 55% and upwards. Specified dienes are butadiene, isoprene, 2-3-dimethylbutadiene, 2-phenylbutadiene and 2-chlorobutadiene while comonomers especially styrene and acrylonitrile may also be present. Specified catalyst are cobalt (III) acetylacetonate, p-methane hydroperoxide and potassium persulphate. The process may be continuous or batch.
