    Abstract: A predictive coding system is disclosed wherein an input data sequence (at a) sequentially including a number of samples (at b to d) is subjected to time-base expansion (at e to g) by n times, where n is an integer not smaller than 2, using an interval of a predetermined period including a plurality of samples as a unit to form n-channel data sequences, and said n-channel data sequences are input in n predictive coding means (6 to 8) in parallel. The coded sequences may then be time-base compressed and then multiplexed (at h). A decoding system may operate in a somewhat similar manner.

    Abstract: In an image encoding apparatus, conversion data obtained by converting image information onto a frequency region (26-30), and corresponding to several frames are parallelly output using a one-frame period delay circuit (34a-34d). The parallelly output conversion data are quantized by a quantization circuit (32a-32d), and a data amount to be obtained when the quantized data are encoded is obtained by a variable-length coding circuit (40a-40d). The data amount information is input to a coefficient operation circuit (44a-44d) for determining a quantization step of the next stage. Conversion data quantized (32e) according to an output from the coefficient operation circuit (38e) are encoded (40e), and the encoded data are output.

There are also formed in the data block a first error detection or correction code to make up a code word which includes the boundary code, but does not include the image code, and a second error detection or correction code to make up a code word which includes both the image code and the boundary code. Alternatively, in the block which includes main information and added information associated with the main information in time series there are formed a first error detection or correction code to make up a code word which does not include the main information, but includes both the added information and a first check bit, and a second error detection or correction code to make up a code word which does not include the first check bit, but includes the added information, the main information and a second check bit.
