    Abstract: PURPOSE:To produce a liquid crystal element capable of suppressing the movement phenomenon of liquid crystal molecules during driving and not degrading display quality even when the element is used for a long time by subjecting a polyimide precursor thin film to uniaxial orientation treatment and calcining the film thereby providing a polyimide orientation controlling layer. CONSTITUTION:A liquid crystal, especially chiral smectic liquid crystal 15 and a spacer 14 are interposed between a pair of substrates 11a, 11b each having a transparent electrode 12a, 12b and an orientation controlling layer (oriented film) 13a, 13b, respectively. The orientation controlling layer 13a, 13b are produced by subjecting a substrate on which a polyimide precursor thin film 2 is formed to uniaxial orientation treatment, especially rubbing treatment, and then heating and calcining to obtain a polyimide oriented film. By this method, regulating force concerning to pretilt of the liquid crystal can be reduced while the uniaxial orientation state of the oriented film is almost maintained. Therefore, movement phenomenon of the liquid crystal 15 related to the directional property of pretilt can be reduced without impairing the uniformity of orientation in the liquid crystal 15.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain a uniform liq. crystal orientation even when a ferroelectric liq. crystal having a pretilt angle of >=10 deg. is used in a ferroelectric liq. crystal element. CONSTITUTION:The rugged shape having 5-100nm width, 5-100nm level difference and 1X10 to 10 units/mm density is formed on the interface between the orientation control layers 14a and 14b of a ferroelectric liq. crystal and a liq. crystal 15 by mixing a fine particle 19 into the coating-type insulating films 13a and 13b. Sine the disarrangement of the liq. crystal molecules in a smectic layer structure is reduced by elastic energy in the interface between the films 14a and 14b and the liq. crystal molecules are uniformly oriented, a picture display having a higher contrast ratio can be obtained.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To provide a liquid crystal element capabel of uniformly orienting even ferroelectric liquid crystal lacked with a cholesteric phase, equaling the inversion thresholds between bistable two states and lessening seizure. CONSTITUTION:This ferroelectric liquid crystal element has the ferroelectric liquid crystal 16 and a pair of substrates 11a, 11b which face each other by holding the ferroelectric liquid crystal 16 in-between and on which electrodes 12a, 12b for impressing voltages to the ferroelectric liquid crystals 16 respectively are formed on the opposite surfaces thereof. The ferroelectric liquid crystal 16 in the orientation atate exhibits at least two stable states. The oriented film formed on the one substrate is subjected to an orientation state in one direction. The angle formed by the liquid crystal molecules formed at this time and the substrate, pretilt angle alpha, is >=5 deg.. The other substrate is subjected to a perpendicular orientation state.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain a liquid crystal element having a large gradation number and high contrast by forming stripes of projections on the surface of one electrode, subjecting the electrode to perpendicular orientation, forming a film on the other electrode, and then uniaxially orienting the film. CONSTITUTION:Stripes of projections 32 are formed on a substrate 31 having an electrode 39 on the one surface. This substrate is stuck with the other electrode substrate 34 by keeping a certain gap by a spacer 33. This element has the electrode 39 where projections 32 are formed and a flat electrode 38, and an oriented film 35 is formed only on the flat side of the element where no projection is formed. This film is uniaxially oriented (by rubbing) in such a manner that the oriented direction is parallel to the longitudinal direction of the stripes of projections on the electrode 39 when the substrates 31, 34 are laminated. On the interface where the stripes of projections are formed, a perpendicularly oriented layer 36 is formed. A ferroelectric liquid crystal 37 is injected between two substrates 31, 34 to obtain the element.
