    Abstract: PURPOSE: To provide a surface conductive electron emission element having the simple structure, an electron source base plate provided with the element in the large area, an electron source, a display panel, an image forming device, and an easy manufacture of them at a low cost. CONSTITUTION: Solution containing metallic elements are applied to the specified position on a base plate 1 in the dripping state, and an element electrode pair composed of two element electrodes 2, 3 so arranged as to be faced to each other and a conductive thin film 4 positioned between the element electrodes are formed. A surface conductive electron emission element is provided by forming an electron emitting part through a process of performing electrification processing to the conductive thin film. An electron source base plate, an electron source, a display panel and an image forming device are manufactured by using the element.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To facilitate production of a liquid crystal display element and to suppress generation of yellowing according to the transfer of liquid crystal molecules by relatively widening a condition, for rubbing under which the transfer of liquid crystal molecules is suppressed. CONSTITUTION:Orientation control films 3a, 3b are subjected to rubbing treatment in two directions, forward and backward. The pretilt angle given by rubbing in the forward direction is offset by the rubbing in the backward direction and is decreased. Next, the pretilt angle is further decreased when the orientation control films 3a, 3b are irradiated with UV rays. The liquid crystal display element P is assembled by using substrates la, 1b subjected to the rubbing treatment and the irradiation with the UV rays. The transfer of the liquid crystal molecules is suppressed even if the specified voltage is applied on the element. The pretilt angle is decreased by both of the rubbing treatment and the irradiation with the UV rays and, therefore, the adequate range of the condition for the rubbing treatment (rubbing intensity) is made wider than in the case of not irradiation with UV rays and the production of the liquid crystal display element is correspondingly made easier.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To uniformize orientation and to obtain equal and symmetric inversion threshold between bistable two states by subjecting the one substrate to perpendicular orientation, forming a film on the other substrate, orienting this film in one direction, and then orienting the first substrate in a different direction as second orientation. CONSTITUTION:This liquid crystal element has a substrate 11 on which a hybrid oriented film 15 is formed and a substrate 11' having an oriented film 15' treated by perpendicular orientation. The oriented film 15 is subjected to first orientation in one direction (shown as arrow 12) and then to second orientation in a different direction (arrow 13). The first rubbing direction 12 differs from the second rubbing direction 13 by an angle thetam. thetam is defined positive in the clockwise direction. When a liquid crystal having negative Ps is used, thetam is positive. When a liquid crystal having positive Ps is used, thetam is negative. The absolute value of Pm is preferably almost same as the apparent tilt angle thetaa of the liquid crystal.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To improve the orienting state of liquid crystal molecules and provide a ferroelectric liquid crystal element improved in electro-optical characteristic. CONSTITUTION:In a ferroelectric liquid crystal element having a ferroelectric liquid crystal 15 nipped between glass bases 11a, 11b on which electrodes 12a, 12b and polyimide orientation control films 13a, 13b subjected to uniaxial orienting treatment are formed, respectively, critical surface separating layers 14a, 14b consisting of thin layers of a nematic liquid crystal are provided between the orientation control films and the ferroelectric liquid crystal. Since no surface memory effect by the interaction between the liquid crystal molecule and the orientation control films is caused, thus, switching characteristic is never changed, and electro-optical characteristic is improved.
