    Abstract: PURPOSE:To enable a printing of sperior image-form to be conducted at low price by a simple and small construction with no use of complicated mechanism and a number of members, by carrying out a recording by a method wherein; after a heat signal is applied on a thermal transfer medium provided with a polymer gel layer exhibiting phase transition due to heat, the polymer gel layer is dipped in a coloring material liquid to obtain thereon a coloring material which is made to be transferred on a transferred material. CONSTITUTION:In a thermal transfer medium 20, a polymer gel layer 2 made of polymer gel exhibiting a phase transition phenomenon due to heat effect is laminated on an appropriate substrate 1. The polymer gel layer 2 is irradiated with infrared rays 3 before being dipped in the coloring material liquid in a vessel 6. The irradiated portion of the polymer gel layer 2 changes its hydrophobic properties to hydrophilic, or reversely hydrophilic to hydrophobic on account of phase transition produced therein. A coloring material layer 8 is formed on the phase transited portion, resulting from the adsorption of the coloring material thereon according to the properties of the phase transited portion. Since the phase transited portion recovers immediately into condition, the color material layer 8 adsorbing thereto turns to that just adhering on the polymer gel 2, resulting in being transferred on a transferred material 5 fed along with the polymer gel layer 2. After completion of the transfer, the phase transited portion already recovered into the condition before heating, allowing the transfer to be continuously repeated.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To prevent the destruction by impact and to permit the operation in a deformed state by forming a polymer layer in such a manner that the liquid is transparent when heated and can scatter light when cooled. CONSTITUTION:Electric power is not supplied to a resistance heating layer 4a in a state 6a in which a switch is held open. Since the contiguous polymer liquid layer 2 is low in temp., the layer 2 is in the transparent uniform state in which the polymer has affinity to the solvent. Therefore incident light 8a straightly passes the optical element 20 and is emitted as it is from the rear of the element 20 when the element is of an optical transmission type. The incident light is reflected by or absorbed into the resistance heating layers 4a, 4b..., insulating layer 5, etc. if the element 20 is of an optical reflection type. On the other hand, the electric power is supplied from an outside power source 7 to the heating layer 4b in the state 6b in which the switch is closed. The heat generated in the heating layer 4b in this stage heats up the liquid layer 2 in the contiguous part. As a result, the polymer deposits into the liquid medium and the liquid layer 2 in said part is made nonuniform when the liquid temp. exceeds the critical temp. of the polymer. The incident light 8b is thus considerably scattered in the liquid layer 2. The purpose of optical modulation or display is attained in the above-mentioned manner.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To provide an optical modulator having the high utilizing efficiency of a luminous flux and high S/N ratio by using the light scattering of a certain kind of a material as a means for optical modulation and utilizing such light scatterable material as the optical modulating body of an optical modulating element to be incorporated into the optical modulator. CONSTITUTION:The heat generated by the selection of a heating resistor 6b is transferred to a thin org. polymer gel layer 2 via an insulating layer 3 contiguous with the heating resistor 6b to heat the org. polymer gel in the region of the layer 2 facing the resistor 6b, thereby forming a cloud part 7 which applies the light scattering propery to said region. The cloud part 7 is annihilated as the org. polymer gel in said region cools upon lapse of the prescribed time. The one cycle since the formation of the cloud part 7 till the annihilation is extremely short in time and said cycle of kHz order is possible.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain a distinct image having high contrast and resolution and to eliminate the limitation in angle of field by sandwiching a liquid layer contg. a surface active agent having a cloud point between a pair of substrates formed with heating elements on the surface of at least one substrate. CONSTITUTION:The liquid layer 2 has transparency in the state (the state below the cloud point) in which the liquid layer 2 is not heated and therefore the incident ray 6-1 on the low-temp. region 4 of the liquid layer 2 passes approximately straightly through the liquid layer 2 and is emitted from the substrate 1. On the other hand, the liquid layer 2 in the region in contact with or proximity to the heated part is also heated to the cloud point or above and the liquid layer 2 exhibits non-transparency when the prescribed position of an IR absorption layer 8 is heated from the outside by the irradiation of, for example, an IR beam 5 according to an information signal. The incident ray 6-2 on the heated region 4a scatters (diffuses) consequently. The heated region 4a restores the original transparency when the temp. falls.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain a recording element using a gel polymer as a photosensitive medium by incorporating a compound which produces a new functional group on being irradiated with light into a gel polymer so that the polymer is made cloudy on being irradiated with light. CONSTITUTION:A polymer causing easily phase transition by a compound which produces a new functional group on being irradiated with light is used as a gel polymer. For example, a polymer consisting essentially of N,N- diethylacrylamide and N,N-methylenebisacrylamide is used. The polymer is swollen with tetramethylethylenediamine or the like, and a compound which produces a new functional group on being irradiated with light, e.g., o- nitrobenzaldehyde is incorporated into the polymer. The resulting composition is held between glass plates to obtain a recording element. When this element is irradiated with light from a high pressure mercury lam, the o- nitrobenzaldehyde is converted into o-nitrosobenzoic acid, making the gel polymer cloudy. The gel polymer contg. the compound can be used as a photosensitive medium in a recording element or a display device.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain an optical modulating element of high quality which has a wide visual angle and superior articulation and causes no eye fatigue by sandwiching a gel layer which scatters light when heated and transmits light when cooled between a transparent substrate and a transparent protectionlayer. CONSTITUTION:The gel layer 2 sandwiched between the transparent substrate 1 and transparent protection plate 3 has its distribution of polymer molecule chains divided into a rough and a close area in a low temperature state, and incident light 6-1 to the low-temperature is scattered. When the layer 2 is heated by being irradiated with an infrared beam 5 according to an information signal, the incident light beam 6-2 to the heated area 4-1 is passed through the layer 2 as it is and reflected regularly by the surface of the substrate 1 because the distribution of molecule chains is uniform. Thus, a sharp, high-resolution image with high contrast is obtained and there is no eye fatigue; and the visual angle is not limited and the power consumption is reduced.

Thus, a sharp, high-resolution image with high contrast is obtained, the visual angle is not limited, and the power consumption is reduced.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain distinct images of high resolution by providing a liquid layer containing a liquid absorbing and discharging dyed polymer, which discharges a liquid at a high temperature and absorbs the liquid at a low temperature, and a liquid and a heating element which gives the thermal energy to this liquid layer. CONSTITUTION:When an infrared beam is not irradiated on a gel 4-2, the gel 4-2 is swollen as it is because it is not heated, and illuminating visible light incident on the dyed gel 4-2 can pass through a gel containing liquid layer 2 because the contained coloring matter concentration in the dyed gel is low and the gel is light in color. When an infrared beam 5 is irradiated on a prescribed part of an infrared absorbing layer 7 in accordance with an information signal or the like, the irradiated part absorbs infrared rays and converts them to heat to heat the dyed gel near it, and the gel discharges a solvent and is contracted in accordance with heating. As the result, the contained coloring matter concentration of the dyed gel is higher, and the degree of absorption of incident irradiated light 6-1 is increased, and the light is weakened considerably. When the temperature falls, the contracted gel 4-1 is swollen to the original state and permits the light to pass through again.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain a clear image with high degree of resolution by providing a pair of electrode and a liquid layer contg. a polymer capable of absorbing liquid in a nonelectric field and desorbing the liquid by the effect of electric field. CONSTITUTION:An optical element comprises lamination of a substrate 1, a gel-contg. liquid layer 2, a transparent protecting plate 3, a picture element electrode 7, and a counter electrode 8. The layer 2 comprises a liquid and a polymer which absorbs and desorbs the liquid. The polymer contracts by desorbing the liquid when an electric field is applied thereto and swells by absorbing the liquid when the effect of the electric field is interrupted. When the switch 5-2 is turned OFF, the gels holds the swollen condition, so the light 9-2 passes through the layer 2 without being scattered nor refracted by the gel 4-2. On the other hand, when a switch 5-1 is turned ON, the gel 4-1 contracts, so the light 9-1 is scattered or refracted, and the rectilinear propagating characteristic of light is disturbed. Since the gel is formed to have very small particle size, a clear image having high degree of resolution is obtd.
