    Abstract: The diameter of a supporting tube of an optical fibre preform is kept constant, notwithstanding the tendency of the tube to collapse as a result of the high temperature necessary to react reagents and deposit raw material. The diameter is controlled by generating between the internal and the external tube surfaces a pressure difference variable in inverse proportion to the diameter of the tube itself and to the total gas flow at an input end of the tube. Means are provided to generate the pressure difference by setting up a pressure drop at the output end of the tube in a device which effects the separation of solid raw material particles from residual gases.

    Abstract: A nozzle used in the coating of optical fibers with a protective resin layer comprises an aluminum body split into two symmetrical halves with cavities which upon assembly form a frustoconical funnel terminating at its narrower lower end in a coaxially converging outlet port. The cavities are machined in solid aluminum blocks whereupon each block is anodized in sulfuric acid to form thereon an abrasion-resistant oxide layer with few, small pores which may be sealed by an aftertreatment in hot de-ionized water.

    Abstract: Preforms for the formation of optical fibres having a controlled radial refractive index profile are produced by the cold deposition onto a cylindrical support of the solid reaction products of fluids selected and proportioned to be vitrifiable to a glass whose refractive index varies according to proportioning of the fluids, the deposited preform then being treated to remove its water content and vitrified. The deposition is achieved by directing the fluids through nozzles in a controlled atmosphere chamber towards either an inner or an outer surface of the cylindrical surface, the nozzles and the cylindrical surface being relatively translated and rotated during deposition to form successive layers of reaction products on the cylindrical surface.
