Abstract: An uncoordinated frequency hopping cellular system includes a mobile unit and a number of base stations. The mobile unit determines which base stations are in a geographical location defined by a location of the mobile unit. This determination is made by transmitting one or more inquiry messages, and receiving response information transmitted by responding base stations. The mobile unit then selects, for use by the mobile unit, one of the base stations from the set of base stations. Each of the base stations receives at least one of the inquiry messages, and transmits the response information to the mobile unit in response to the at least one received inquiry message. The mobile unit determines synchronization information from the response information, and uses this to establish communication with the selected base station.

Abstract: A first wireless unit engages in contemporaneous participation in a plurality of wireless networks. A connection is established with a second wireless unit in a first wireless network. Then, a hold time-out period is determined, and the first wireless unit enters a hold mode with respect to the first wireless network. While in hold mode, the first wireless unit establishes a connection with a third wireless unit in a second wireless network. This may include the first wireless unit paging the third wireless unit and acting as a master unit in the second wireless network. Alternatively, the first wireless unit may periodically listen for paging messages from a master unit, and respond when paged, thereby becoming a slave in the second wireless network. The first wireless unit then participates in activities in the second wireless network. Upon expiration of the hold time-out period, the first wireless unit resumes active participation in the first wireless network. This may include determining a second hold time-out period to be used in connection with the second wireless network, and entering a hold mode with respect to the second wireless network.

Abstract: A step size is generated for use in a continuous variable slope delta (CVSD) demodulator by determining a likelihood that a group of one or more coded bits includes an erroneous bit. The step size is then generated as a function of the likelihood that the group of one or more coded bits includes an erroneous bit. For example, if the CVSD demodulator requires that the step size be increased, then the step size is increased by a larger amount if the likelihood of error is not greater than a threshold likelihood, and the step size is increased by a lesser amount if the likelihood of error is greater than the threshold likelihood.

Abstract: A system comprises a wireless master unit and one or more wireless slave units, each having a unique identifier. When a wireless slave unit is active, it is addressed by one of a limited number of temporary addresses. A PARK mode enables a wireless slave unit to be in an idle state during which its temporary address is deallocated, enabling that address to be assigned to another wireless slave unit. To page a parked slave, a paging beacon packet is broadcast to, and received by, each of the wireless slave units at fixed intervals during a master-to-slave time slot. Each wireless slave unit determines whether the received paging beacon packet includes its unique identifier. If so, the wireless slave unit retrieves a temporary address from the paging beacon packet. The wireless unit transmits a response to the wireless master unit during a subsequent slave-to-master time slot if the received paging beacon packet included the unique identifier belonging to the wireless slave unit. Parked wireless slave units are also assigned a unique response number by the master. The master broadcasts a polling beacon packet during a master-to-slave time slot. If the parked slave unit desires access to the channel, it transmits a response in an N:th slave-to-master time slot following the polling beacon packet where N is a function of the slave's unique response number.

Abstract: Etablishing a connection between a paging unit and a standby unit in a chann el hopping communications system includes activiting the standby unit for an activation time period out of every standby time period. During each activation time period, the standby unit monitors a selected channel for receipt of a paging message. The selected channel is selected from a plurali ty of channels, and, for each subsequent activation time period, the selected channel is a subsequent one of the plurality of channels as specified by a hopping sequence and an internal clock. A page train is repeatedly transmitt ed from the paging unit to the standby unit, until a response is received from the standby unit. Each page train includes a plurality of paging messages, each paging message being transmitted on a different one of a subset of the plurality of channels. Selection of a page train for transmission by the paging unit may be based on an estimate of the standby unit's internal clock . The generation of page trains can be further optimized for those cases in which more than two page trains will be transmitted. The purpose of the optimization is to generate page trains that, when transmitted, are most likely to elicit an early response from the paged unit.
