Abstract: A radio access network portion of a telecommunications network (18) which serves a mobile station (MS) is connecting to a core network. The radio access network portion has plural base stations (BS) serving respective plural cells (C), as well as plural control nodes (RNCs). The control nodes include a first control node (RNC1) for controlling a first group of the plural base stations and a second control node (RNC2) for controlling a second group of the plural base stations. A multicell area (MCA) includes cells served by at least some of the first group of base stations and cells served by at least some of the second group of base stations. The radio access network portion of a telecommunications network further has a paging control node which stores information regarding the multicell area. To page the mobile station in the multicell area, the paging control node (1) sends paging messages to each of the base stations serving the multicell area controlled by the paging control node; and (2) sends a paging message to any other control nodes which control base stations serving cells in the multicell area. The paging control node determines to which base stations and other control node(s) it should send paging messages by consulting a paging table (100). Perferably the paging control node is one of the control nodes of radio access notwork. The paging control node is connected to the other control node(s) by an intercontrol node link (32) over which the paging message is sent.

Abstract: In the context of a radio communications system that includes a core network coupled to a radio access network (RAN) and a plurality of mobile terminals, a connection may be established between the core network and one of the plurality of mobile terminals through the radio access network. A temporary RAN identifier is associated with the mobile terminal for the established connection. The temporary RAN identifier is used to assist in the transfer of information pertaining to the established connection or to the establishment of that connection through the radio access network. The radio access network includes a first RAN node associated with a first geographical coverage area and a second RAN node associated with a second geographical coverage area. When the mobile terminal moves from the first coverage area to the second coverage area, the connection is re-established through the RAN by way of the first and second RAN nodes using the temporary RAN identifier. The temporary RAN identifier in packets corresponding to the established connection is used to direct those packets to and from the first and second RAN nodes. The first and second RAN nodes analyze packets corresponding to the established connection including the temporary RAN identifier included in each packet. From analysis of the temporary RAN identifier, the first and second RAN nodes determine where packets are to be routed. The temporary RAN identifier is also advantageously employed to facilitate mobile terminal registration and paging operations.

Abstract: In connection with a diversity handling moveover procedure for a cellular system having soft handover, allocation of a replacement diversity handling unit in a target node occurs only after a moveover decision has been made by a source node. Initially, an original or source diversity handling unit at the source node performs connection combining and connection splitting functions for legs of a mobile connection routed through plural base stations serving a mobile station. In accordance with movement of the mobile station, the source node makes the movement decision. The moveover decision can be based on factors such as base station utilization and/or actual and/or predicted directional movement of the mobile station. In some embodiments, the diversity handling moveover procedure involves selection among plural nodes for situs of the replacement or target diversity handling unit.

Abstract: Different types of traffic requiring different inactivity timer settings are assigned to different bearers or to different QoS classes. Different inactivity timer settings are established for different traffic types. Individual bearers or individual QoS classes are linked to a corresponding inactivity timer profile. The link may be accomplished in a number of ways. For example, an additional QoS parameter may be employed in a 3GPP QoS profile, or a new QoS class identifier may be mapped to an inactivity timer setting. Different inactivity timer settings allows both UE battery power conservation to be prioritized for some traffic and end-user experience (quick subsequent response times) to be prioritized for other traffic.

Abstract: An Internet Exchange and a method thereof, wherein the Internet Exchange is arranged between at least one mobile network operator and at least one In ternet content provider. An operator domain may include a component containi ng network presence information; a component containing global location info rmation of a mobile station; and a component containing awareness and contex t information for the mobile station. Gateways may retrieve this information from the operator domain components and may deliver messages and advertisem ent consumption information between the mobile network operator and the Inte rnet content provider. A user data management component may manage interacti ons between the mobile network operator, the operator domain components, the mobile station, and the Internet content provider; and a content aggregatio n and management component may manage, store, format, and deliver media info rmation supplied by the Internet content provider to the mobile network oper ator.

Abstract: A system for inhibiting the transmission of an access request message from a mobile station when either the system is incapable of granting access at the class of service desired by the mobile or access by the mobile at that class of service would increase the interference level of the target base station or a neighboring base station past its interference capacity. In one embodiment, each base station broadcasts a maximum data rate access parameter and any mobile receiving that parameter and seeking access at a greater data rate refrains from transmitting an access :request message. In another embodiment, each mobile calculates from its path loss to the base station the power level it must transmit in order to gain access as well as the effect of that transmission on the interference level of both the target base station and neighboring base stations. If transmission at the required power level would increase the interference level of any base station past its maximum capacity, the transmission is inhibited. The system is most effective in CDMA mobile cellular radio systems.

Abstract: IN A COMMUNICATIONS SYSTEM, COMMUNICATIONS RESOURCES ARE ALLOCATED IN A DYNAMIC, ''AS NEEDED" FASHION. NO EXPLICIT SIGNALING IS NEEDED TO EXCHANGE INFORMATION PERTAINING SPECIFICALLY TO AN ALLOCATED COMMUNICATIONS RESOURCE. INSTEAD, RESOURCES ARE IMPLICITLY ALLOCATED BY USING ONE OR MORE PARAMETERS KNOWN TO BOTH THE RADIO ACCESS NETWORK (24) AND MOBILE STATION (30) THAT ARE MORE OR LESS UNIQUE TO THE MOBILE STATION (30). SUCH PARAMETERS ARE USED TO GENERATE OR ADDRESS A COMMUNICATIONS RESOURCE FOR USE BY THE MOBILE STATION (30). THE PARAMETERS MIGHT, FOR EXAMPLE, BE INFORMATION READILY ACQUIRED OR COMMUNICATED AS A RESULT. OF A SYNCHRONIZATION PROCEDURE, A MOBILE STATION REGISTRATION PROCEDURE, A MOBILE STATION ACCESS PROCEDURE, A PAGING PROCEDURE, ETC. EXAMPLE PARAMETERS MAY INCLUDE A SYSTEM FRAME NUMBER, A SYSTEM IDENTIFICATION, A RADIO ACCESS NETWORK IDENTIFICATION, A BASE STATION IDENTIFICATION, A CELL IDENTIFICATION, A MOBILE STATION-ASSOCIATED SIGNATURE, AN ACCESS REFERENCE NUMBER CORRESPONDING TO THE MOBILE STATION (30), A TIME INSTANT WHEN AN ACKNOWLEDGMENT MESSAGE IS RECEIVED, ETC.(FIGURE 1)
