    Abstract: A wireless receiver (100) demodulates a frequency modulated RF signal by a direct conversion procedure, including channels (110, 112) for producing in-phase and quadrature components. A processor (123, 133) periodically estimates an error in at least one of the in-phase and quadrature phase components and produces an adjustment signal of at least one of the in-phase and quadrature components to compensate for the detected error. The processor is operable to apply alternatively different procedures to estimate the error. The procedures including a first procedure applied when a signal quality value of the received RF signal is above a threshold value and a second procedure applied when a signal quality value of the RF received signal is not above the threshold value. Also described is a method (300) of operation of the receiver. The error may be a DC offset, phase and/or amplitude error.

    Abstract: An antenna arrangement comprises an antenna 102 and a coupling 104 provided between the antenna 102 and a wireless modem card 101. The coupling 104 includes a balun connector 109, 150, 111 providing a parallel resonator at an operational frequency of the antenna. The balun 104 may comprise a coaxial cable 109 formed in an elongated loop with a cross over portion 111. This coaxial cable arrangement provides the inductive and capacitive connection and coupling required to create the desired resonance. The coaxial cable loop balun 104 may be moulded within a strong, flexible polymeric material as an insulating casing. The insulated balun module formed may be arranged as an extension of the modem card. The coaxial cable 109 may include a plug connector 105 which fits into a slot connection 106 formed in the card 101 with a stop member 107. The antenna 102 may have two elongate conductive wire monopole elements of different lengths arranged in an insulating jacket and connected via a conductive rod to a flexible joint 117 connected to the central conductor of the coaxial cable balun 104. The coupling arrangement provides high impedance improving signal gain and isolation and reducing the influence of computer generated noise.

    Abstract: An antenna 100 comprises first and second helical portions 103, 105 which are electrically coupled such that the second portion 105 acts as a top load to the first portion 103. The said helical portions are arranged such that, in use, the magnetic flux of the said coil portions 103, 105 cancel with one another. The helical coil portions 103, 105 are wound in opposite directions to provide the said flux cancellation and to reduce the inductive coupling such that a mainly capacitive top load to the first helical portion 103 is provided. The coupling between the said portions 103, 105 may be of a galvanic or non-galvanic (ie inductive or capacitive) nature. The second helical coil portion 105 may be arranged at least partly inside or outside the first coil portion 103. The pitch of the windings, the diameter of the wound portions and the position at which the coupling occurs between the coil portions may be varied to obtain the desired operational characteristics. The antenna may include a sleeve 107 as a spacer between the coil portions and the antenna may be enclosed in moulded plastic material with an outer envelope 109. The antenna may provide a compact arrangement which may be modified to provide broadband or multiple frequency band operation for a mobile station radio communication device.

    Abstract: An antenna 200 comprises an elongate member with an elongate first portion 202 of an unshielded conductor. The unshielded conductor 202 is connected to an elongate second portion 203 where the second portion has a first conductor 202 and a second conductor 204 separated from one another by an insulator and a third conductor 206 interconnects the first and second conductors 202, 204 at an end of the second portion 203. One end of the first portion 202 may be connected to a radio frequency transmitter and the other end connected to a proximal end of the said second portion 203. The third conductor 206 of the second portion 203 may be located at the distal end of the second portion. Third and fourth sleeve antenna portions 207, 210 may be connected to the second portion 203 to extend the number of different operational frequencies. Different conductor thicknesses may be used for different antenna portions. The antenna 200 may include a ground plane 201 and a dielectric housing 211. The antenna may be a flexible whip antenna operating at various different operational frequencies for use in a mobile station.

    Abstract: A multi-frequency band antenna ( 100 ) includes a dual-pitch coil ( 120, 130 ), and a top insert ( 140 ), operably coupled to an antenna base ( 105 ). The multi-frequency band antenna ( 100 ) is configured to radiate electromagnetic signals at a lower frequency 230 ) of multi-frequencies using substantially the whole of the dual-pitch coil ( 120, 130 ); and at a higher frequency ( 240 ) of said multi-frequencies using a length of said antenna base ( 105, 110 ) and a portion of said dual-pitch coil ( 120 ). A first portion of the dual-pitch coil has a longer pitch than a second portion of the coil and the first portion has a first end attached to the antenna base and a second end attached to the second portion, and the second portion has an effective electrical length substantially equal to a wavelength (lambda) of radiation having a frequency corresponding to a frequency in the second band.
