    Abstract: An RF PA, with particular application to a constant envelope RF transmitter, is controlled to operate near saturation by feedback control of its power supply voltage. In a transmitter, a coupler 107 and detector 109 provide a feedback signal to a comparator 115, which also receives a reference signal from reference source 113. A control signal Vcont is produced by integrating (117) the difference signal from the comparator 115. In prior art, the control signal Vcont adjusts the bias of the RFPA 101. In the present invention, the control signal instead adjusts the output of a voltage regulator 151 to provide a variable supply voltage for the RF PA. The voltage regulator 151 may reduce or increase the voltage of the battery supply 104. The bias voltage may be held constant. Increased efficiency is achieved and the efficiency is substantially constant and not dependent on the saturation point of the particular RF PA device 101 that is used.

    Abstract: A Cartesian loop transmitter having isolator eliminator circuitry is presented. The isolator eliminator circuitry includes a set of low pass and wide band pass as well as narrow band pass filters for each of I- and Q-channels, root mean square detectors and dividers connected to a means for comparing. Signals from the means for comparing are received by a microprocessor which controls attenuation setting. The output level of the transmitter is adjusted by generating a small signal measuring an on-channel signal level and a small signal level and then calculating a ratio of the small signal to the on-channel signal. The attenuation setting is increased if the ratio exceeds a defined threshold.

The second resonator has a coupling section 209 and a radiating section 211. The second antenna may be in a detachable housing which may be friction mounted on the housing of the first resonator (see fig 4). The first resonator may be a helical coil. The coupling section and radiating of the second resonator may be made of a single conductive wire.

    Abstract: A wireless communication unit (200) includes a transmitter (220) and an antenna 202. An isolator circuit 226 is coupled between the transmitter (220) and the antenna 202 and includes a first directional coupler 310 providing a first transmission path for routing a first portion of the transmit signal, and a second transmission path 320 for routing a second portion of the transmit signal. The first directional coupler is preferably a magic-T four-port device, also known as a 3 dB hybrid. A second coupler 340, is coupled to the first directional coupler 310, for combining the first portion of the transmit signal and the second portion of the transmit signal and providing a combined transmit signal to the antenna 202. The second coupler is preferably a 3 dB three-port device. An advantage of the invention is that a return path to the transmitter for signals reflected at the antenna has acceptable isolation, with minimised insertion loss.

    Abstract: A wireless communication system (100) includes a first cellular network (150) to serve terrestrial mobile stations and a second cellular network (110-1) to serve airborne mobile stations. Handover means facilitates handover of communications between the first network and the second network by producing information relating to the location of the mobile station (170) and deriving from this information a list of selected cells to be scanned by the mobile station for prospective handover. A wireless subscriber unit and method of cell re-selection are also described. In this manner, calls are not dropped when transferring a call from, say, an AGA non-terrestrial cell to a terrestrial cell.
