Abstract: Transmitter and receiver units for use in a communications system and configurable to provide antenna, frequency, or temporal diversity, or a combination thereof, for transmitted signals. The transmitter unit includes a system data processor, one or more modulators, and one or more antennas. The system data processor receives and partitions an input data stream into a number of channel data streams and further processes the channel data streams to generate one or more modulation symbol vector streams. Each modulation symbol vector stream includes a sequence of modulation symbol vectors representative of data in one or more channel data streams. Each modulator receives and modulates a respective modulation symbol vector stream to provide an RF modulated signal, and each antenna receives and transmits a respective RF modulated signal. Each modulator may include an inverse (fast) Fourier transform (IFFT) and a cyclic prefix generator. The IFFT generates time-domain representations of the modulation symbol vectors, and the cyclic prefix generator repeats a portion of the time-domain representation of each modulation symbol vector. The channel data streams are modulated using multi-carrier modulation, e.g., OFDM modulation. Time division multiplexing (TDM) may also be used to increase flexibility.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for controlling the transmission of signals from one or more of a plurality of mobile stations (1300) to a base station (1400) on a plurality of M multiple access channels. A power control information packet formed from a plurality of power control bits is transmitted from the base station (1400) to the one or more mobile stations (1300). Each of the power control bits in the power control information packet has a position that is mapped to a selected access channel and to a time offset within the selected access channel. The power control information packet is received at a first mobile station (1300). A message is then transmitted from the first mobile station (1300) to the base station (1400) on a first access channel and at a first time offset associated with the first access channel. The message is transmitted from the first mobile station (1300) at a power level determined in response to a first power control bit in the power control information packet. The first power control bit is located in a first position in the power control information packet, the first position being mapped to the fir st access channel and the first time offset.

Abstract: For transmit diversity in a multi-antenna OFDM system, a transmitter encodes, interleaves, and symbol maps traffic data to obtain data symbols. The transmitter processes each pair of data symbols to obtain two pairs of transmit symbols for transmission from a pair of antennas either (1) in two OFDM symbol periods for space-time transmit diversity or (2) on two subbands for space-frequency transmit diversity. NT ~ (NT - 1)/2 different antenna pairs are used for data transmission, with different antenna pairs being used for adjacent subbands, where NT is the number of antennas. The system may support multiple OFDM symbol sizes. The same coding, interleaving, and modulation schemes are used for different OFDM symbol sizes to simplify the transmitter and receiver processing. The transmitter performs OFDM modulation on the transmit symbol stream for each antenna in accordance with the selected OFDM symbol size. The receiver performs the complementary processing.

Abstract: Techniques to "successively" process received signals at a receiver unit in a MIMO system to recover transmitted data, and to "adaptively" process data at a transmitter unit based on channel state information available for the MIMO channel. A successive cancellation receiver processing technique is used to process the received signals and performs a number of iterations to provide decoded data streams. For each iteration, input (e.g., received) signals for the iteration are processed to provide one or more symbol streams. One of the symbol streams is selected and processed to provide a decoded data stream. The interference due to the decoded data stream is approximately removed (i.e., canceled) from the input signals provided to the next iteration. The channel characteristics are estimated and reported back to the transmitter system and used to adjust (i.e., adapt) the processing (e.g., coding, modulation, and so on) of data prior to transmission.

Abstract: The invention relates to a method for transmitting pilot signals used for measuring and reporting channel state information, CSI, in a multiple input/multiple output, MIMO, system, comprising: generating a pilot sequence by using a maximal-length shift register sequence, m-sequence; assigning a different shift to multiple transmit antennas, wherein the value of the shift is dependent on at least one characteristic of the communication channel; generating a pilot signal at each transmit antenna by shifting the pilot sequence by the value specified by the shift; and transmitting the pilot signal via the transmit antenna.

Abstract: Techniques for processing a data transmission at a transmitter and receiver, which use channel eigen-decomposition, channel inversion, and (optionally) 'water-pouring'. At the transmitter, (1) channel eigen-decomposition is performed to determine eigenmodes of a MIMO channel and to derive a first set of steering vectors, (2) channel inversion is performed to derive weights ( e . g ., one set for each eigenmode) used to minimize ISI distortion, and (3) water-pouring may be performed to derive scaling values indicative of the transmit powers allocated to the eigenmodes. The first set of steering vectors, weights, and scaling values are used to derive a pulse-shaping matrix, which is used to precondition modulation symbols prior to transmission. At the receiver, channel eigen-decomposition is performed to derive a second set of steering vectors, which are used to derive a pulse-shaping matrix used to condition received symbols such that orthogonal symbol streams are recovered.

Abstract: Pilots suitable for use in MIMO systems and capable of supporting various functions are described. The various types of pilot include-a beacon pilot, a MIMO pilot, a steered reference or steered pilot, and a carrier pilot. The beacon pilot is transmitted from all transmit antennas and may be used for timing and frequency acquisition. The MIMO pilot is transmitted from all transmit antennas but is covered with different orthogonal codes assigned to the transmit antennas. The MIMO pilot may be used for channel estimation. The steered reference is transmitted on specific eigenmodes of a MIMO channel and is user terminal specific. The steered reference may be used for channel estimation. The carrier pilot may be transmitted on designated subbands/antennas and may be used for phase tracking of a carrier signal. Various pilot transmission schemes may be devised based on different combinations of these various types of pilot.
