Consequently, compared with the case where the optical disk 1 is fixed directly with the center pin 2, the contact point of the optical disk 1 and the center pin 2 is made smaller, and the possibility that the optical disk 1 is sucked via impurities, such as foreign particles, adhered to the center pin 2 and distorted as a consequence becomes lower. Moreover, the turntable 5 is set to not to make contact with the optical disk 1, in regions other than the central part of the optical disk, hence the distortion of the optical disk 1 can be reduced as compared with that of the conventional fixing method to the turntable which is based on the entire surface suction of the optical disk 1.

SOLUTION: A modulation removing circuit 23 converts a totally reflected return light quantity S1 from an optical head 15 into a totally reflected return light quantity S2 in which the effect of the modulation is removed. A gap controller 24 controls the distance between the optical head 15 and a glass master disk 16 according to the return light quantity (totally reflected light quantity S1). The distance between the optical head 15 and the glass master disk 16 is constantly controlled according to the return light quantity S2 converted by the modulation removing circuit 23. Thereby, the stable gap control is carried out without being influenced by the modulation of the recording signal.

The optical head protecting device 35 protects the SIL 44 and the glass master disk 16 on the basis of a light beam returning from the glass master disk 16 originating from the laser beam emitted from the laser element 21 and condensed on a position preceding a position on which the SIL 44 condenses the laser beam.
