    Abstract: A telemark ski binding having a pre-compressed spring (56) augmenting the forces imposed on the heel of a boot by the cable (40) looped therearound, when the heel is in a heel low position, and resisting the forces imposed on the heel, when the heel is in a high heel position, in order to achieve a selected force acting upon the heel as the heel travels within a range of motion between the heel low and the heel high positions. The pre-compressed spring (56) imparts the selected force to the heel by continually biasing an energy transfer element (52) in a direction away from a movement imposed upon the energy transfer element (52) by the cable (40) attached thereto. The selected force is preferably substantially uniform throughout the range of motion but may also be substantially linearly increasing or decreasing as the heel travels from the heel low position to the heel high position. No matter which selected force is implemented, the force acting on the heel is relatively high when the heel is in the heel low position and is relatively low when the hell is in the heel high position.

The skiboard is between 150 and 200 centimeters in length with a longitudinal camber elevating the waist between 1 and 6 centimeters. Left and right loose-heel binding devices (108L, 108R) are secured to the skiboard, one behind the other and parallel to each other at an angle of less than 35 degrees with the axis of the skiboard. The skiboard may split to alternately form separate right and left ski portions (233R, 233L). Bindings with mounting plates (228R, 228L) may be alternately mounted on the ski portions or used to join their centers together. Fasteners join the front and back ends of the ski portions to assemble the skiboard.

    Abstract: A step-in binding for reversibly securing a boot to sports equipment is disclosed. The binding comprises a toe portion (a toe iron or toe box) that engages the toe of the boot and a cable having both ends connected to the front portion. The cable extends from the front portion around the heel of the boot. The cable includes a heel lever that engages both the heel of the boot and a heel block such that the boot heel remains free to be lifted vertically relative to the ski and binding. The heel of the boot is reversibly secured to the sports equipment by frictional forces between a camming surface of the heel lever and an anterior surface of the heel block. The heel lever can be tipped between an open position and a closed position.

    Abstract: Telemark ski bindings may incorporate a rotational decoupler as disclosed. When exposed to subthreshold torques during normal use, the ski boot will remain rotationally coupled to (i.e, cannot rotate relative to) the ski. When exposed to threshold- or suprathreshold torques, such as when a skier loses control, the ski boot will become rotationally decoupled from (i.e., can rotate relative to) the ski, thereby protecting the skier's legs from the excessive torque and resulting leg injury. Also disclosed are tracked/railed alpine touring and telemark bindings, as well as methods for interchanging such bindings on railed/tracked skis.
