    Abstract: The invention relates an apparatus for the dewatering of sludge and similar substances with a sludge chamber (20) provided with filter areas (25) having at least one sludge inlet being connected to a device (3) creating a hydrostatic filtration pressure. The sludge chamber is formed by pressure plates (22, 23) which can be pressed against each other to create an additional mechanical dewatering pressure by high pressure generators (33). Further there is provided a predewatering stage (2) containing filter areas which is forming a compensation container (5) and which is connected to a continuous sludge feed (6). The device (3) for creating the hydrostatic filtration pressure is formed as one or more syringe-like piston cylinder units (14) of preferably as one or more containers being changeable in volume. These have a sludge inlet connected to the predewatering device (2) and a sludge outlet (17) connected with the sludge chamber (20), wherein at the sludge inlet and at the sludge outlet there are provided closing and control valves (21) which are alternately operable.

    Abstract: A backwashable self-cleaning strainer has a vertical housing containing a rotatable strainer basket. The housing has an inlet adjacent the top thereof and an outlet adjacent the bottom wall, with a flush discharge opening in the bottom wall. Components for rotating the strainer basket are located outside the flow of water containing particulates that enters the housing. A hollow backwash conduit with a passage through the sidewall is positioned adjacent the inner surface of the strainer basket and communicates with a sealable aperture in the wall of the housing. Upon opening of the aperture, cleaned water flows through the side wall of the strainer basket, removing particulates therefrom, and out the hollow backwash conduit. An intermittently rotatable brush is also provided to brush the inner surface of the strainer basket.

    Abstract: An improved method for separating solid particles from liquids, such as dewatering and thickening of sludge collected in a container (1), involves the use of at least one drainage unit (9) having doubled screened jacket walls (25, 26) defining a dewatering chamber (10). The liquid relieved of solids within the chamber is subjected to a turbulent motion acting against said screened jacket walls for obstruction of the solids deposition at the wall surfaces of the chamber facing the sludge in the container. The turbulent motion is obtained by a forced fluid F introduced in the chamber through one or more tubes (30, 31). The fluid may favourably be in form of compressed air or water returned from the reject system (14, 16).
