Abstract: A process for preparation of a tufted polyamide-type fiber carpet is provided. A primary backing tufted with yarn comprised of at least 85% by weight of fibers selected from the group nylon fibers, wool fibers, and blends thereof is provided. A molten polymer adhesive is provided on the back side of the tufted primary backing, the polymer adhesive consisting of at least 85% by weight of one or more ethylene copolymers each comprised of 50 to 95 weight % of ethylene, and 5-50 weight % of at least one comonomer selected from the group of esters and carboxylic acids. The tufted primary backing and the molten polymer adhesive layer are compressed under a moving belt that applies a pressure of at least 1 N/cm 2 for a period of at least 5 seconds during which time the polymer adhesive remains in a molten state. The molten polymer adhesive then cooled to a temperature below the melting point of said molten adhesive. A secondary backing may be placed over the molten polymer adhesive on the back of the primary backing.

Abstract: A biofabricated material containing a network of crosslinked collagen fibrils is disclosed. This material is composed of collagen which is also a major component of natural leather and is produced by a process of fibrillation of collagen molecules into fibrils, crosslinking the fibrils and lubricating the crosslinked fibrils. Unlike natural leathers, this biofabricated material exhibits non-anisotropic (not directionally dependent) physical properties, for example, a sheet of biofabricated material can have substantially the same elasticity or tensile strength when stretched or stressed in different directions. Unlike natural leather, it has a uniform texture that facilitates uniform uptake of dyes and coatings. Aesthetically, it produces a uniform and consistent grain for ease of manufacturability. It can have substantially identical grain, texture and other aesthetic properties on both sides distinct from natural leather where the grain increases from one side (e.g., distal surface) to the other (proximal inner layers).

Abstract: A carpet constructed from a biodegradable nonwoven face layer and a backing layer that is biodegradable and/or recyclable. The face layer comprises a needle-punched nonwoven web formed from a blend of different fiber types each of which is biodegradable, the blend comprising face fibers having a relatively high decomposition temperature and thermally activatable binder fibers having a thermal activation temperature lower than the decomposition temperature of the face fibers. The binder fibers bind to one another and to the face fibers. The face fibers can comprise one or more types of fibers that are biodegradable. Suitable fiber types include but are not limited to wool, hemp, cotton, polylactic acid, jute, flax, kanaf, sisal, rayon, and silk. The binder fibers in some embodiments of the invention comprise low-melt polylactic acid.
