Abstract:
An assembly and method for using a flexible tensile member as part of the rigging for a dragline bucket. The tensile member includes a stranded core surrounded by a separate armor layer. The armor layer assumes the form of a hollow cylinder having a substantial wall thickness. A significant gap is provided between the outward-facing surface of the stranded core and the inward-facing surface of the armor layer. This gap minimizes wear between the two elements during the normal bending and flexing of the tensile member. A first anchor is attached to a first end of the stranded core and a second anchor is attached to a second end of the stranded core. These anchors serve to transmit tension carried by the stranded core. A first end of the armor layer is also attached to the first anchor and a second end of the armor layer is attached to the second anchor.

In an elevator rope, a plurality of steel outer layer strands are twisted together on an outer circumference of an inner layer rope. The inner layer rope has: a fiber core; a plurality of steel inner layer strands that are twisted together directly onto an outer circumference of the fiber core; and a resin inner layer rope coating body that is coated onto the outer circumference. A diameter of the inner layer strands is smaller than a diameter of the outer layer strands. The inner layer strands are greater in number than the outer layer strands.

A combined cable comprising a core cable of high-strength synthetic fibers, which take the form of a twisted bundle of monofilaments or a plurality of twisted bundles of monofilaments, and comprising an outer layer of steel wire strands, is characterized in that the bundle or bundles of monofilaments is or are stretched, with a reduction in diameter, and held in this state by a sheathing, in particular a braided sheathing. The extension under strain of the core cable under load is thereby reduced, so that the load distribution between the cross section of steel and the cross section of synthetic material of the cable improves.

A composite cable is provided with a primary strength member comprising wire lay synthetic fibers coaxially wound around a cable core and an outer jacket of wire lay steel wires coaxially wound over the primary strength member. The composite cable provides improved bend-over-sheave performance, and is configured to be suitable for used as a purchase cable in an aircraft arrestment system.

A synthetic fiber rope having load-bearing aramide fiber strands laid together in parallel in concentric layers of strands and an intersheath with sheath surfaces adapted to the external contours of the adjacent layers of strands. By positively bonding the inner and outer layers of strands a higher torsional rigidity is achieved as well as a rope structure of the stranded rope which is less susceptible to twisting. Furthermore, the elastic intersheath between the layers of stands serves to protect the strands against abrasion and assists in transmitting torque within the rope over a large area.
Abstract:
A tension member for an elevator system has an aspect ratio of greater than one, where aspect ratio is defined as the ratio of tension member width w to thickness t (w/t). The increase in aspect ratio results in a reduction in the maximum rope pressure and an increased flexibility as compared to conventional elevator ropes. As a result, smaller sheaves may be used with this type of tension member. In a particular embodiment, the tension member includes a plurality of individual load carrying cords encased within a common layer of coating. The coating layer separates the individual cords and defines an engagement surface for engaging a traction sheave. The individual cords are constructed of several strands and each strand is separated from direct contact with each other strand by polymeric material. While aspect ratios of greater than one are preferred, tension members of other ratios including round also benefit from the prevention of direct contact.

A cable for the reinforcement of plastic and elastic articles, such as conveyor belts and the like, is provided which includes a plurality of metal strands which are twisted to form a cable and a non-metallic insert which is disposed between the surfaces of the strands which oppose each other so as to prevent the strands from contacting each other, while leaving the surfaces of the strands which define the outside diameter of the cable exposed. A method and device for producing the cable is also provided.
Abstract:
An elongated article such as a rope or cord having a series of fairings spaced apart along its length is produced in a continuous manner by the method and apparatus of the present invention. The rope comprises a core having a plurality of yarns surrounded by a layer of resilient material, and a braided jacket surrounds the core and anchors the fairings thereto. The fairings are provided by a resilient fairing yarn which is fed toward the core and which is manipulated by a needle during braiding of the jacket to cause each fairing to have a base portion anchored between the jacket and the resilient layer of the core and streamer portions extending outwardly from the base portion. The needle is mounted for reciprocation parallel to the moving core upstream of the braider, and the fairing yarn passes through the eye of the needle and a first length is displaced through the path of movement of the braid yarns into engagement with a gripping assembly located downstream of the braid yarns. The gripping assembly holds the first length of fairing yarn so that as the needle retracts, another length of braid yarn is pulled through the needle-eye. Continued operation of the braider causes the jacket to be applied around the portion of the fairing yarn engaged with the core, thereby forming the base portion for the next fairing. A control system is disclosed for synchronizing movement of the needle with the displacement of the rope and for adjusting of the spacing between the fairings.In another embodiment, a method and apparatus is disclosed for producing a faired article which does not have a separately-formed core.

A telecommunication submarine cable of co-axial construction has a multistrand centre core imparting tensile strength to the cable, the core having adjacent layers of the core separated by a layer of soft metal.
