Abstract:
In a heating furnace 10 where elongate workpieces fed into the heating furnace are sequentially transferred on fixed beams by walking beams from an inlet area to an outlet area, concaves to retain the workpieces are formed at least on the walking beams. A concave in the inlet area for heating the workpieces is increased in width in a transfer direction, while a concave in the outlet area where the heated workpieces are wholly heated to a uniform temperature and retained in position is formed in a corrugated configuration. Despite curving of an elongate workpiece being heat treated as transferred by walking beams in a direction crossing a longitudinal direction of the workpiece, this ensures that the curved workpiece is properly transferred and adequately corrected for the curving.
Abstract:
Steel charges are heated to rolling temperature in reheating furnaces. It is standard practice for the charge to be moved through such a furnace on continuous water-cooled tubular supports crossing the furnace in a straight line. The supports obstruct charge heat-up to the desired temperature at the points where the charge is in contact with the tubular supports. A lateral offset of the tubular supports or similar designs have been unable to overcome this disadvantage. The tubular supports of the present reheating furnace are therefore several times offset from a straight line through the furnace between the furnace inlet and the furnace exit or, in the case of a furnace with a fixed hearth in the soaking zone, the furnace inlet and the fixed hearth. Each tubular support section between two such offsets is shorter than the upstream tubular support section. The present arrangement is particularly advantageous for pusher-type furnaces or walking-beam furnaces.
Abstract:
A walking beam furnace with a hearth of fixed beams and of walking beams arranged on supports passing through slots in the floor of the furnace in which, so as to avoid heat loss and undesired heating of the supports in the region of the floor slots, covers are provided for the floor slots that are movable with the supports in at least the feed direction.
Abstract:
An improved walking beam furnace insulation in which the leg openings through the furnace floor are provided with insulation to limit the heat losses therethrough and such insulation includes an insulating cap secured to the leg within the furnace and positioned to engage the insulating material surrounding the leg openings in the furnace floor during a substantial portion of the time. Additionally a pipe is secured to said leg to circulate water therethrough.
