Abstract: 1471934 Lubricating compositions EXXON RESEARCH & ENG CO 6 May 1975 [17 May 1974] 22085/74 Heading C5F A lubricating composition comprises a lubricating oil, (A) an overbased detergent additive, (B) 0À1-15% of either (a) a monocarboxylic acid, anhydride or salt thereof or (b) a dicarboxylic acid, anhydride or salt thereof, the acid, anhydride or salt having at least 30 C atoms, or (c) the reaction product of phosphorus sulphide with a hydrocarbon and (C) a C 2 -C 4 dihydric alcohol or a di- or triÀ(C 2 -C 4 ) glycol or a C 2 - C 10 ether alcohol. The TBN of suitable sulphonates may be 50 to 350 and that of suitable phenates 50 to 100. The acid, anhydride or salt may have a M.W. of 600 to 3000 and be derived from a polymer of a C 2 -C 5 mono-olefine, e.g. polyisobutenyl succinic anhydride. The reaction product of phosphorus sulphide with a hydrocarbon may be that of P 2 S 5 with a polyolefin having a molecular weight between 500 and 1500. Component C may be ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol or triethyleneglycol. Suitable lubricating oils include animal, mineral and vegetable oils, e.g. castor oil, fish oils or oxidized mineral oils. Other suitable oils are synthetic esters, e.g. dioctyl adipate, dioctyl sebacate, didecyl azelate, tridecyl adipate, didecyl succinate, dideoyl glutarate and mixtures thereof. Other suitable esters are polyesters, e.g. the reaction product of polyhydric alcohols such as trimethylol propane and pentaerythritol with monocarboxylic acids such as butyric acid. Complex esters may be used, e.g. those formed by esterification between a carboxylic acid, a glycol and an alcohol or a monocarboxylic acid.
