    Abstract: This portable apparatus comprises a housing having a circuit built-in, and an input key, an ultraviolet receptive opening and a display, which are combined with the housing as one body. An ultraviolet sensor is provided in the interior of the ultraviolet receptive opening. This portable apparatus comprises means for receiving characteristic data about a characteristic of a user's skin against a suntan from the input key and measurement data about an ultraviolet ray quantity from the ultraviolet sensor, for predicting a user's suntanned skin condition from these data, and for generating image data for displaying an image about the prediction of user's suntanned skin condition. The image, which is based on image data generated by this means, is displayed on the display, making it possible for the user to confirm the user's skin condition.

Date Nov. 23, 1995An apparatus for carrying out spectral analysis of optical radiation emitted from a light source (11) comprises a spectral detector (1) having an entrance aperture (10) for the radiation from thelight source (11), a first imaging optical component (11), a first imaging optical component (12), a diffraction grating (14) for wavelength dispersion of the radiation, order sorting means (131, 132) for separation of the spectral orders of the diffraction grating (14), a second imaging optical component (15), and a detecting unit (16) for registration of the light source spectrum divided into order spectra through the order sorting means (131, 132). The order sorting means (131, 132) comprise at least two refractive optical components manufactured from different material. The two refractive optical components (131 and 132) together with the diffraction grating (14) and the imaging optical components (12 and 15) produce a substantially uniform distribution of the order spectra on the detector unit (16). Favourably the order sorting means (131, 132), the diffraction grating (14) and the imaging optical components (12, 15) also co-act to produce a substantially stigmatic image of the entrance aperture (10) in at least one point on the detector unit (16).

A monochromator comprises in an autocollimation arrangement, an entrance/exit slit defined by jaws 5, 6, a mirror 7 and a prism 2 with a mirrored surface 3, the prism and the jaw 6 being fixedly mounted on a turntable 1 with an axis of rotation 4 which extends perpendicularly through the optical axis of the beam of light which passes through the slit, and is parallel to the slit. On a change of wave-length which is effected by rotating the prism 2 on turntable 1, jaw 6 is also rotated altering the width of the slit, which enables the spectral band width of the transmitted radiation to be maintained approximately constant. The initial slit width may be altered by adjusting jaw 5.

    Abstract: 740,048. Spectroscopic apparatus. COMMONWEALTH SCIENTIFIC & INDUSTRIAL RESEARCH ORGANIZATION. March 25, 1954 [May 12, 1953], No. 8810/54. Class 97 (1). In a prism monochromator radiation from a source is arranged to pass through the prism before reaching the entrance-slit so that only a narrow wavelength band passes therethrough, the radiation in such passage being refracted at two of the prism faces, and the radiation which passes through the prism after passing the entrance slit being refracted at one of the two said prism faces and at the third face which third face is not traversed by the radiation in its first passage through the prism. As shown, light from a source G is collimated by a concave mirror M 5 and directed on to the monochromator prism P and is reflected by a mirror M 6 to pass twice through surfaces F 2 and F 3 . The light returns to the mirror M 5 and a narrow waveband thereof is directed by a mirror M 7 into the entrance slit S 1 whence it passes via a collimating reflector Ml to the faces F 1 and F 2 of the prism, being reflected back along its path by a mirror M 2 ; Mirrors M 4 and M3, arranged at the entrance slit, as described in Specification 682,149, direct the light once more back to the prism and after a number of such passages it emerges through the exit-slit S 2 . The mirrors M 3 and M 4 may be omitted.
