    Abstract: An indicator tube includes a pair of common memory plate electrodes (3, 4) and independent address XY electrode groups (1, 2) separate therefrom. When an address discharge is to be carried out by the XY electrode groups (1, 2) from a state in which no wall charge uniformly exists on wall surfaces of the pair of memory electrodes (3, 4) in all cells on a picture screen or on a line to be addressed, the driving method includes holding one of the pair of memory electrodes (3, 4) at a potential higher than a discharge space potential generated by an address discharge in a range such that a discharge is not caused on the low voltage side of the address electrode during an address period, holding the other memory electrode (3, 4) at a potential lower than the discharge space potential in a range such that a discharge is not caused on the high voltage side of the address electrode, selectively accumulating charged particles generated by the address discharge in cells disposed at the positions corresponding to an image as negative and positive wall charges, and continuously effecting a display discharge or memory discharge utilizing a presence or absence of the wall charges as position information. A variation of this driving method is used when an address discharge is to be carried out by the XY electrode groups (1, 2) from a state in which positive and negative wall charges uniformly exist on wall surfaces of the pair of memory electrodes (3, 4) in all cells on a picture screen or on a line to be addressed.

    Abstract: A plasma display panel (PDP) comprises a plurality of anodes (1, 12, 21) on an upper plate, a plurality of first sustaining electrodes (3, 14, 25) and a plurality of alternating second sustaining electrodes (4, 17, 24) and cathodes (2, 16, 23) on a lower plate, and a dielectric (15) on the first and second sustaining electrodes (3, 14, 25 and 4, 17, 24) and cathodes (2, 16, 23). A method for driving the PDP includes the steps of initiating a discharge by supplying a potential higher than the discharge firing voltage to the anodes (1, 12, 21) and cathodes (2, 16, 23), generating a predetermined potential between cathodes (2, 16, 23) and first sustaining electrodes (3, 14, 25) to increase the voltage generated from the discharge-initiating step, supplying a voltage higher than a discharge sustaining voltage between the first and second sustaining electrodes (3, 14, 25 and 4, 17, 24) to maintain the discharge, and supplying a narrow pulse to cathodes (2, 16, 23) for erasing the discharge.

    Abstract: The present invention is directed to a discharge tube for use with a display device which is simple in structure and which can be mass-produced satisfactorily. Further, the discharge tube for display device of the present invention can be increased in resolution and can be made large in size with ease. A pair of memory elements (Ma), (Mb) having memory electrodes (3a), (3b) formed of conductive layers having a plurality of apertures (5a), (5b) arranged in an XY matrix form and in which the whole surface of the memory electrodes (3a), (3b) are covered with insulating layers (4a), (4b) are laminated such that corresponding apertures (5a), (5b) covered with the insulating layers (4a), (4b) are communicated with each other to thereby form discharge cells. all of which are sealed into a tube body in which a discharging gas is sealed. Then, an AC voltage necessary fir maintaining a discharge is applied between the memory electrodes (3a), (3b) of the pair of memory elements (Ma), (Mb).

The electrode layout eliminates the need for crossover areas in the leading out of electrodes and is very useful for realizing high resolution and low cost AC driven self-shift plasma display panels.
