    Abstract: A point to point optical link from a transmitter (1) to, a receiver (2) via an optical fibre (3), the transmitter (1) comprising light sources (4) providing signals of different wavelengths and a multiplexer (6) combining the signals onto a single channel for transmission along the optical fibre (3), and the receiver (2) comprising light sensors (8) and a demultiplexer (10) for separating the signals of different wavelengths and directing each to a respective light sensor (8). The output of the transmitter (1) is temperature dependent but arranged so that the change in wavelength with respect to temperature for each of the signals is similar, and the demultiplexer (10) being adjustable so that its response to signals with respect to their wavelength can be actively tuned so as to follow variations in the wavelength of the signals received.

    Abstract: A semiconductor laser has a semiconductor optical amplifier 11 with first and second semiconductor waveguides 18, 19. The first waveguide forms at least part of a first optical path in the amplifier between reflectors, and the second waveguide is optically coupled to the first waveguide in the optical amplifier. A laser output is connected to a second optical path formed at least in part by the second waveguide 19. Alternatively, one of the reflectors may be a reflective grating 25 which provides substantially total reflection. One of the reflectors in the amplifier may be provided by coating one end facets 20 of the optical amplifier in gold. The waveguides may be formed as part of an integrated semiconductor amplifier. The waveguides may be rib waveguides forming a four port evanescent coupler. The semiconductor amplifier 11 may a rectangular chip mounted in a recesss 12 in an integrated circuit optoelectronic device 13. The laser may be in the form of an external cavity arrangement or may be a distributed feedback laser.

    Abstract: An optical phase modulator comprises a ribbed waveguide formed of silicon. The waveguide is doped to form a PN junction extending the length and height of the of the rib 12. Terminals 57, 59 are provided which enable a reverse bias to be applied to the PN junction and thereby extend the carrier depletion region 63 to alter the refractive index. The PN junction is offset from the centre of the rib, but the depletion zone 63 extends over the central axis 65 of the waveguide.

    Abstract: An optical transceiver (1) for transmitting and receiving optical signals of the same wavelength comprising a light source, such as a laser diode (2) or a reflector (11), a light receiver such as a photodiode (3), and an input-output (4) for receiving light from and transmitting light to a bi-directional optical fibre (5). An optical switch (6), e.g. a Mach-Zehnder interferometer comprising one or more p-i-n diode phase modulators (9, 10), is provided to selectively provide optical communication between the light source (2, 11) the optical fibre (5) and between the optical fibre (5) and the light receiver (3) to provide low-loss paths therebetween. With a reflector (11) acting as the light source, the optical switch (6) can also be used to modulate the output of the transceiver. The optical transceiver (1) may be used in a home transceiver unit (24) connected to receive digital signals of a first wavelength and analog signals, e.g. for CATV, of a second wavelength from a central unit (31).
