    Abstract: Marine fouling of structures is prevented by applying to the vulnerable areas an electrically conductive coating consisting of particulate stainless steel in a matrix. There is applied to the coating a potential sufficient to inhibit or to detach marine growth. Preferably the coating is applied over an intermediate layer contg. Zr od Cd. The steel may be contained in a silicate matrix, and may have a cathodic potential applied to it sufficiently to produce an impressed current 10-2500 ma/fg2. The invention is applied to ships or to offshore platforms, esp. those constructed of carbon steel.

    Abstract: PURPOSE: To provide a new method for producing a unique metal-containing isotropic pitch material that is suitable for production of carbon fiber. CONSTITUTION: A soluble aromatic organometallic compound is added to a carbon starting material that is substantially defective in the meso phase pitch, the resultant mixture is subjected to the heat soaking to give the isotropic pitch containing mesogen and soluble organometallic compound. Then, the pitch products are subjected to the solvent separation to separate the mesodiene containing the metal from the organometallic compound. This metal-containing mesogen is heated up to sufficiently elevated temperature and fused to form the metal-containing mesophase pitch. In another process, the carbon starting material is thermally soaked to form isotropic pitch product containing mesogen. A high-molecular-weight soluble aromatic organometallic compound is added to the mesogen-containing isotropic pitch product, then subjected to the solvent separation. The metal-containing carbon fiber produced from the mesophase pitch shows increased stability and tensile strength. Alternatively, the solvent fractionation or separation is carried out under supercritical conditions to form metal-containing mesophase pitch. The formulation of the organometallic compound to the carbon source may be done either of before or after thermal soaking.

    Abstract: PURPOSE: To provide a graphite nipple suitable for connection of a graphite electrode by containing mesophase pitch carbon fibers in a nipple extrusion blend, extruding the blend, and baking it at the specified temperature for graphitizing. CONSTITUTION: Carbon fibers manufactured from mesophase pitch having a melting point of less than 350 deg.C are mixed with cokes and a binder, a mixture is extruded to firm an extruded blend. The extruded blend is extruded to form a carbon nipple. The carbon nipple is baked at a temperature exceeding about 538 deg.C for sufficient time, then the baked carbon nipple is heated at a temperature exceeding about 2704 deg.C for graphitization. A graphite nipple suitable for connection of a graphite electrode is obtained.

    Abstract: PURPOSE: To make it possible to accurately measure the flow rate of mass by setting the minimum deviated pressure in a vertical vessel, fully filling liquid in the vessel against the minimum set pressure, and monitoring the change of the mass at a measuring time interval. CONSTITUTION: First controllers 20 to 22 program to fully fill liquid in a cylinder (vertical vessel) according to need, measure set head change, integrate flow signals from a flowmeter FI and transmitter FT, calculate and output a correction coefficient, calculate correct flow rate, supply a flow control signal to a flow control valve 78 via a relay 14, supply a level signal to a level controller 23, and refill a column via charging valves 4, 5 in next cycle. In this case, the comparison of the column reference flow rate with the integrated flow rate from the flowmeter FI/transmitter FT is conducted by the controller 21. The control of the flow rate of the liquid is conducted by the controller 22.

    Abstract: PURPOSE: To efficiently control the primary motion to be induced by heaving, pitching, rolling, surging, and swaying waves without fixing a floating platform to the bottom of the sea, by connecting a mass stabilizer having the sufficient added mass formed of water surrounding the stabilizer so that it may be suspended beneath the lower side of a floating platform. CONSTITUTION: An added mass stabilizer 24 is suspended beneath a strut stabilizing floating platform 22 by many tendons 22, namely, ropes or stretching materials, at a sufficient distance. A stabilizer system maintains suspending tendons 26 in the pulling state in relation to all loading state by providing the added mass stabilizer of a water weight, and the sufficient water mass (that obtained by the weight of water to be moved when the sunk weight and the stabilizer mass are moved) performs the specified operation. That is, since the mass acts as a fixing member according to external force, the floating platform can be so designed as to cope with the heave, pitch, roll, surge and sway motions as the primary motion.
