Abstract: A shive element 10 has a flexible membrane 26 which is substantially impermeable to air. In use, the membrane 26 may unfold like a bag (Fig. 2) as it fills with air and as beer is dispensed. Because of this, air does not contact the beer/ ale 40 in the cask 14 and the beer 40 stays fresh for longer after tapping (extended shelf life). The shive element 10 may have an air hole 20 and a plug 24, the membrane surrounding the air hole. Alternatively, the shive element may be suitable for receiving a shive 100 (Fig. 3), the membrane placed across the bottom end of the shive element. The membrane may be retained in the hollow volume of the shive element by part of the plug. The flexible membrane may surround the bottom end of the plug. The shive element may have a releasable/ breakable protective cover.

Abstract: An apparatus for feeding animals is provided. An apparatus for feeding an animal comprising: an elongated shaft having a handle end and a proximal end which has a generally T-shaped member; a substantially triangular central link which is adapted to releasably engage with the proximal end of the shaft by way of an aperture which receives the T-shaped member and also having at least one female connecting member; at least one bowl support which is able to releasably engage with the central link and being adapted such that it has at least one male connecting member which releasably engages with the central link female connecting member; and at least one bowl; the apparatus adapted such that the bowl is able to releasably engage with the at least one bowl support and the apparatus is arranged such that in use a user is able to grasp the handle and lift and carry the apparatus. The apparatus makes it much easier for the elderly or people with physical disabilities to feed their pets.

Abstract: 480,857. Electron lenses. WRIGHT, W. D., and KLEMPERER, O. July 30, 1936, Nos. 21046/36 and 13036/37. Drawings to Specification. [Class 39 (i)] An electrostatic lens for focusing an electron image on a fluorescent or mosaic screen, or for concentrating the beam in an iconoscope comprises two coaxial cylindrical electrodes, the ratio of the effective diameters of which is between 1À5 : 1 and 2À5 : 1, and the arrangement is such that the more nearly parallel of the incident and emergent beams is contained in the smaller diameter electrode, which receives the higher potential. The arrangement is stated to reduce spherical aberration. The ratio of the diameters may be 2:1. The cylinders may be of the same diameter and one may have a reducing diaphragm, or of different diameter, and may overlap or be spaced axially or be axially end to end. The ratio of the voltages on the cylinders, which determines the focal length, may be between 2: 1 and 8: 1.

Abstract: 453,644. Microphotographs of type matter. HOUTERMANS, F. G., 27, Silverdale Gardens, Hayes, Middlesex, and WRIGHT, W. D., 8, Oakfield Road, Southgate, London. Jan. 24, 1936, No. 35848/34. Drawings to Specification. [Class 98 (i)] Typographical matter is reproduced with a large reduction ratio by first preparing a negative at an intermediate reduction ratio, e.g. 7: 1, under conditions producing high contrast, copying this negative without reduction to form a positive, producing therefrom a negative at a final reduction ratio under conditions producing minimum loss of definition, and producing the final positive therefrom without reduction. The intermediate negative may be made on standard kinematograph film and is developed quickly in a strong developer. A positive is made from this by contact or projection printing and the negative therefrom is developed slowly in a weak developer. The final positive may be made by contact printing.

Improvements in or relating to the electrical control of the intensity of a beam of light

Abstract: 373,294. Electro-optical light-valves. GRAMOPHONE CO., Ltd., Hayes, Middlesex, and WRIGHT, W. D., 69, Lakeside Road, Palmers Green, London. Feb. 26, 1931, No. 6102. [Class 40 (iii).] In light-modulating apparatus comprising a Kerr cell situated between polarizing and analysing devices, means are provided for rendering the light incident on the Kerr cell elliptically or circularly polarized and thereby introducing a predetermined, fixed retardation between those components of the light which lie parallel and perpendicular to the lines of electric force within the Kerr cell. The means, which may alternatively be applied to the light emerging from the Kerr cell before it passes through the analysing device, may be a mica plate, a piece of celluloid strained so that it becomes birefracting, or a second Kerr cell subjected to a constant biasing potential. The Figure, which serves to illustrate the operation of the apparatus, shows the characteristics of a modified and of an unmodified Kerr cell arrangement. In the curve OPABCD relating to an unmodified cell, the intensity of the light transmitted increases gradually to a maximum with the increase of the potential applied to the cell. With the modified cell, if the fixed polarizing means is arranged to produce a phase retardation of one half wave-length, the intensity of the light transmitted is a maximum when no potential is applied to the cell and gradually decreases with increased potential as indicated by the curve TGHBJF. In the application of the apparatus, to obtain variations of intensity from zero to that represented by MC, a range of applied potential PM is necessary with the normal Kerr cell, whereas in the modified arrangement a reduced range, represented by KF, will be sufficient, thus indicating an increased sensitivity in the light-modulating apparatus.

Abstract: 311,869. Smith, D. W., and Whyte, H. W., (Representative of Whyte, R. J. W.). March 20, 1928. Locating sounds. -Direction apparatus comprises two microphones M , M or other receivers carried at a suitable distance apart on an arm b rotatable in azimuth, amplifying devices coupled to the microphones, and a suitable single-phase phase-meter t connected with its windings in the output circuits of the amplifiers. A suitable phase-meter is that described in Specification 162,471, [Class 37, Electricity, Measuring &c.], and a diagram of connection for thermionic valve amplifiers is given in the Specification. When the horizontal arm is rotated so that one microphone is situated in the same phase of the same sound wave as the other, the phase-meter indicator zero, and the required direction is at right angles to the vertical plane passing through the microphones.
