A hydroprocessing process is disclosed which includes two hydroprocessing reaction stages represented by vessels (12) and (14), both of which produce a liquid and vapor effluent represented by lines (42) and (54), and a liquid vapor contacting stage. The first vapor effluent contains impurities, such as heteroatom compounds, which are removed from the vapor by contact with processed liquid effluent derived from one or both reaction stages in contact vessel (20) and optionally also liquid recovered from processed vapor. The first and contact stage liquid effluents are passed into the second stage vessel (14) to finish the hydroprocessing. The contact and second stage vapor effluents are cooled to recover additional hydroprocessed product liquid in lines (58) and (64).

Processes for reforming, and in particular aromatising, hydrocarbons from a petroleum source may be carried out by contacting the hydrocarbons with a catalyst of a zeolite KL impregnated with a metal promotor such as platinum, in which the zeolite crystals are of hockeypuck shape. The processes have a good yield and selectivity for the desired reformed products and the catalyst is stable, is associated with a low rate of coke formation, and has a long catalytically active life before regeneration is required.

Potassium zeolites of type L in which the crystals are very flat cylinders of ''hockeypuck'' or ''coin'' shape may be prepared by adjusting the K2O/SiO2 and SiO2/Al2O3 ratio and including in the mixture from which the zeolite is crystallized a small amount of divalent cation such as magnesium or barium. The resulting zeolite has a short channel length and is particularly useful as a base for aromatization catalysis.

The invention is directed towards a method for adjusting the NO2 to NO content of a diesel engine's exhaust without affecting engine performance. The NO2 to NO ratio is adjusted by varying the amount and timing of secondary hydrocarbon injection during the engine's expansion stroke. The appropriate amount of secondary injected hydrocarbon and the appropriate injection timing are determined from calibration values obtained by direct engine measurements and the desired NO2:NO ratio.

A wide-cut lubricant base stock is made by hydroisomerizing and then catalytically dewaxing a waxy Fischer-Tropsch synthesized hydrocarbon fraction feed and comprises the entire dewaxate having an initial boiling point in the 650-750 DEG F+ range. Formulated lubricating oils made by admixing the base stock with a commercial automotive additive package meet all specifications, including low temperature properties, for multigrade internal combustion engine crankcase oils. The waxy feed has an initial boiling point in the 650-750 DEG F range and continuously boils to an end point of at least 1050 DEG F+. Lower boiling hydrocarbons produced by the process are separated from the base stock by simple flash distillation. The base stock comprises the entire dewaxate having an initial boiling point in the 650-750 DEG F range.
