Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a small sized and light-weighted power source for an embedded medical device that has a sufficiently high energy density without affecting safety. SOLUTION: This is a re-balanced lithium ion secondary battery, and in particular, has a cathode active material of LiCoO 2 . The preferred anode material is carbon and, by setting the ratio of the cathode material to the anode material at about 1.35 to about 2.25, coupling is balanced. This battery can provide the energy density higher than the secondary battery conventionally in public domain by increasing, in particular, the charge voltage up to at least 4.4 V. Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make an electrode active material in touch with a current collector to discharge more efficiently. SOLUTION: The current collector 10 is a substrate having a grid pattern 18 comprising open areas converging at an imaginary focal point on a connector tab 20 of the substrate. The openings are grouped into distinct regions with the larger openings 48 immediately adjacent to the connector tab and the smaller openings 50 distant there from. Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To incorporate a substitution cathode active material in a rechargeable battery without sacrificing conductivity of the electrolyte, cycling efficiency and safety. SOLUTION: The new sandwich type positive electrode for a secondary battery includes a 'sacrificial' alkaline metal 16 as well as a cathode active material 12A. In the case of vanadium oxide silver, the desirable sacrificial alkaline metal is lithium. When the battery is activated, lithium metal is automatically intercalated in the vanadium oxide silver. In this way, the sacrificial lithium is consumed and the vanadium oxide silver is in principle lithiated. This means that the cathode active material such as vanadium oxide silver that is in the past generally used only for a primary battery can be also useful for a secondary battery from now on. Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a bonding pad for connecting electric energy storage equipment to transplantable medical equipment. SOLUTION: The bonding pad comprises at least two contact surfaces, one of the surfaces having a channel for receiving a terminal lead of the electric energy storage equipment, and the other of the contact surfaces being relatively flat for connection to the medical equipment. The channel thus increases the surface of contact with the terminal lead, enabling a stronger connection and enabling the opposite flat contact surface to make contact with the lead of the medical equipment using various methods.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a reliable and economical system for sealing a sheet of a separator material 20 around an electrode. SOLUTION: An opening of the separator material 20 is cut by a cutting system 26 controlled by a computer and a press is combined with a heat sealing device, so that an upper platen and a lower platen are pressed to each other. The upper platen works as a pressure pad and the separator material 20 is cut and sealed between the pressure pad and a heating element.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To manufacture an improved cathode active material for a nonaqueous lithium electrochemical battery. SOLUTION: The cathode active material is manufactured to contain an ε-phase silver vanadium oxide manufactured using γ-phase silver vanadium oxide as a starting material. Reaction between the γ-phase silver vanadium oxide and a silver salt generates the novel ε-phase silver vanadium oxide having a low surface area compared with that of an ε-phase silver vanadium oxide using vanadium oxide (V2 O5 ) and a similar silver salt as the starting material. The ε-phase silver vanadium oxide having the low surface area exhibits a long period stability in the pulse-dischargeable battery.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To stabilize electricity charging/discharging characteristic and to lengthen life by making initial irreversible capacity of a secondary battery can be compensated. SOLUTION: A 'sacrifice' alkaline metal part is formed in a portion of carbon system anode material as negative-electrode composition of a sandwiched type electrochemistry secondary battery. That is, the 'sacrifice' alkaline metal part of a lithium system is made to form in the anode material of hard carbon. Then, by compensating the initial irreversible nature of the electricity charging/ discharging, which is the problem of hard carbon, the excellent electricity- charging/discharging cycling characteristic that the hard carbon has, is employed efficiently, and the life of the conventional secondary battery is improved greatly.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lithium ion electrochemical cell with high charging/ discharging capacity and long cycle life, showing a reduced first cycle irreversible capacity. SOLUTION: The advantages of the cell are realized by adding at least one kind of carbonate additives to the electrolyte containing alkali metal salt dissolved in the solvent mixture composed of ethylene carbonate and an equilibrium mixture of dimethyl carbonate, ethylmethyl carbonate, and diethyl carbonate. A recommended additive is either one of linear or cyclic carbonate containing O-X bond and O-Y bond of covalent bond at both end of carbonyl group (where, X and Y are same or different kinds with each other, X is chosen from NR1R2 and CR3R4R5, Y is chosen from NR'1R'2 and CR'3R'4R'5, R1-R'5 are same or different kinds with one another.). In this case, at least either one of O-X bond or O-Y bond has a dissociation energy of almost less than 80 kcal/mol.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an alkali metal/oxyhalide battery improving extremely the low temperature performance and safety during operation. SOLUTION: This electrochemical battery consists of a) alkali metal anode, b) a cathode collector, and c) a catholyte containing an organic or inorganic depolarization solvent comprising halogen or inter-halogen dissolved therein. The halogen or inter-halogen has discharge potential larger than the depolarization solvent, and the radio of concentration of halogen or inter-halogen to that of the depolarization solvent is larger than mole ratio of 1:6. A preferable battery includes new combination of halogen and/or inter-halogen mixed in a lithium/SOCl2 system.

The cover does not require welding except when it is fixed in an opening end 68 of a casing vessel body 42. This is particularly important for the battery which becomes power supply of implant medical treatment equipment because the cover contributes to improve volume efficiency of the battery.
