Firebars have a vertical web 11, preferably formed with a double level at the top, and an upper fuel-supporting portion divided into a number of small platforms 14 by transverse air passages 12, 13 substantially V-shaped in plan. The passages may have straight or curved sides, and may be wider at the sides than at the centre. The openings may be vertical or inclined from front to rear. The ends 11 , 11 are wider than the platforms 14 so that longitudinal air spaces are left between adjacent bars. Spacing projections 18 may be cast with one or more of the platforms. Abstract: 976. Boswell, J. C. Jan. 18. Acrobatic apparatus; roundabouts.-An appliance to be used in theatres, circuses, &c. consists of a suitably braced wheel 1, which is mounted upon an inclined shaft 2, carried by a carriage 3, and which is provided with seats 9 adapted to carry performers who fall off, as the wheel 1 rotates, in order to amuse spectators. The carriage 3 is provided with a shaft and a handle bar or whippletree attachment, by means of which it is drawn around a preferably circular course, its motion being restrained by an adjustable pivoted bar 5. The axles of the wheels of the carriage 3 are arranged in radial alinement with the pivot of the bar 5. The wheel 1 bears on the ground at its underside, so that, as the carriage 3 moves along, the wheel also rotates on its shaft 2 in planes inclined to the horizontal. The underside of the wheel 1 is covered by an iron band 14, which prevents wear of the wheel. Handles are provided on the spokes of the wheel 1, so that the riders can remain on the seats 9 until the wheel attains a certain velocity. [Also in Division F2] In a strengthening attachment for a vehicle leaf spring, comprising in accordance with the parent Specification a bowed spring blade 4 having out-bent ends, central securing means permitting adjustment of the curve of the blade, and U-clips 8a, 8b for locating the attachment on the leaf spring 1, there is provided a locating plate 15 arranged to extend outwardly towards and bear against the eye end of the spring 1. The locating plate 15 has a bore pivotally mounted on a bolt 16 carried by the U-clip 8b. Rubber or plastics pads 17 for interposition between the blade 4 and spring 1 are located by the U-clips 8a, 8b. The central securing means comprises bolts 11, a channel member 10a for engaging the spring 1, and a profiled cross-bar 6 engaging beneath a humped central portion 4a of the blade 4.

A two-stroke I.C. engine has two or more pairs of cylinders, each pair being arranged in the fore and aft direction in a plane containing the crankshaft and being inter-connected by a common combustion chamber 3, Fig.1 at their heads, one cylinder of each pair having exhaust ports E and the other cylinder having inlet ports I, both sets of ports being uncovered by the pistons during the two-stroke cycle. Compressed air is supplied to inlet ports I from an enginedriven rotary blower or compressor (not shown). Fuel is injected into the combustion chambers 3, 4, 10A, 11 when the pistons 16 are at t.d.c. and the resultant combustion forces the pistons downwards towards b.d.c. until the exhaust port E starts being uncovered to allow the gases to exhaust under their residual pressure. Subsequently the inlet ports I are uncovered and scavenging is completed by the charging air. On the compression stroke the exhaust ports are closed after the inlet ports so that scavenging is completed by the beginning of compression. In another embodiment the pistons of an eight cylinder Vee engine have projections 18, Fig. 4 with an upper surface 19 shaped to conform to the roof 20 of the combustion chamber. Recesses 22 in the side walls of the projections define a combustion space 23 when the pistons are in the t.d.c. positions. Compressed air is supplied to the inlet ports from a blower (30), Fig. 3 (not shown) arranged between the banks of cylinders. In modifications, a mixture is supplied to the engine by a carburettor, the inlet port is arranged to give "swirl", and the exhaust pistion of a cylinder pair leads the inlet piston by a small angle.
