Abstract: 641,197. Weighing-apparatus. ZWICKY, J. F., and SIMPSON, A. J. Jan. 19, 1948, No. 1599. [Class 143] [Also in Group I] In an apparatus for dispensing measured quantities of liquid for sub-irrigation of plants, a filled liquid container 1 is supported near the top of a column 5 by a counterbalanced lever 17 which, after the container has dispensed a predetermined weight of liquid, releases said container and allows it to slide down the column so terminating the dispensing of liquid. The lever 17 comprises a pair of side members pivoted to a sleeve 16 and carrying at one end an adjustable counterweight 20 and at the other a roller 18 which engages under an L-shaped member 19 secured to the container. When liquid is being discharged through the pipe 12 the container is gradually lifted by the arms which are so arranged that the liquid level remains constant throughout the discharge period. When the lever 17 has been pivoted to a position wherein the roller 18 can no longer engage the member 19 the container slides down the column 5 onto a buffer spring 7, and in so doing passes beneath the discharge' point 13 so cutting off the supply of liquid thereto and allowing the surplus liquid remaining in the pipe to turn back into the container. The container is now refilled and catches 24 are engaged with a bolt 25 which then holds the lever in a position ready for engaging under the member 19 when the container has been re-lifted. After re-engagement of the roller 18 and member 19 the catches 24 are automatically disengaged from the bolt 25 by springs 26 and the apparatus repeats the cycle of operation. The sleeve 16, which is adjustable on the column 5 to give any desired head of liquid, carries abutment members 21 which limit rotation of the lever 17 when it is released from the member 19. A counterweight 11 assists the raising of the container 1. In a modification (not shewn) the counterweight 20 may be replaced either by a spring device or by a hydraulic piston and cylinder fitted with a bleeder valve, and the single column 5 may be replaced by a plurality of columns. In a further modification the retaining mechanism may be located on a separate support.

Abstract: 258,081. Fraser, J. S. Sept. 9, 1925. Spindle apparatus; stop-apparatus, non-automatic; reeling-machines; creel arrangements. - Relates to mechanism for spinning yarn. thread, or twine of the kind comprising a horizontally disposed spool rotatable about its own axis in a frame carried by a rotating vertical spindle. The frame 4 is carried by spindle 1, driven by a pulley 13, and a cup-frame 6, driven by a pulley 14, is geared with a pinion 10 on the end of a spindle 5, which drives the spool 17 by a sprocket chain 30. The pulley 14 is driven through variable reduction gearing in the same direction as the pulley 13. A brake shoe 55 operated by a screwed rod 56 is provided for the cup-frame 6, and the spindle 1 is provided with a brake 52 operated by a pedal 53. A traverse guide 49 lays the material on the spool 17, or around the spool 17 and a spool 5 on the spindle 5 to form a hank. The spool 17 drives a crank disc 43, which reciprocates a pin 46 carrying the guide 49 in a slot 47 in the cover plate 42, by means of a singletoothed wheel 36 geared with a disc 40 on the axle of the crank disc 43. The spool 5 is held in side bearings in the frame 4 by bolts, and the spool 17 is mounted on a squared centre-pin 18 journaled in the frame and on a squared pin 23, which may be withdrawn against the action of a spring by a knob 29 to allow removal of the spool, the driving-sprocket being mounted on another squared part of the pin 23. The Provisional Specification describes an arrangement wherein, when forming twine, a creel or hake is driven by a pulley at the same speed as the frame but in the opposite direction and is provided with a twist top provided with a slot for each yarn, the creel bobbins being mounted on squared centre-pins and retractible pins and braked by a spring-pressed plate which bears on the face of the flanges.

Abstract: 182,243. Simpson, R. J., and Bate, G. C. April 19, 1921. Grease cups containing spring-actuated plungers. The cap is held down upon a washer 11 on a foundation plate 10 by a double lever 18 connected by links 16 to a ring 23 fitting round and below the plate 10. One arm of the lever engages a stop 22 in the closed position. To open the grease-cup, pressure is applied to a pair of wings 21 on the lever 18. Movement of the lever 18 from its central position allows one of its pivots 9 to press lightly against the plungerrod 2 and to spring into a groove 8 when the plunger is retracted for re-filling. On again closing the cup the pivot 9 is withdrawn automatically from the groove. A projection 7 on the rod 2 serves as a stop and an indicator. The plate 10 may be the head of a shackle bolt.
