Abstract: 596,198. Plant spraying. ASHTON, V. J. R. July 25, 1945, No. 19008. [Class 6 (ii)] [Also in Group XXIX] In an apparatus for supplying water or liquid manure to plants, the container 10 is mounted on a tripod consisting of the legs 16 and a retaining ring 18, and has a spigot connection 12 to a sparge pipe 14 with holes 21. This pipe is laid under the line of cloches to be watered. A perforated cone 19 forms a strainer over the spigot outlet at the base of the container.

Abstract: 339,014. Robinson, C. J., and Robinson & Son, Ltd., T. Sept. 16, 1929. Treatment by straining.-Rice, after hulling and damping and before pearling and polishing in cone-mills, is subjected to steam treatment to soften the grain covering while tempering or toughening the grain itself. In the plant shown, the rice is passed through a gelatinizer, comprising one or more conveyers c in a casing or casings, having nozzles d which direct steam-jets on to the rice. The rice is initially damped d in steeping-vats a, whence it is fed by feeders b to the gelatinizer and thence passes to an aerated sieve e and conditioner through which air is circulated.

Abstract: 308,063. Taylor (Brass Founders), Ltd., G., and Tate, J. R. Feb. 25, 1928. Guards.-Freely-revoluble tubular guards for shafting, as described in Specification 209,282, are made in segments embraced bv and interconnected with segmental resilient bands, in order to facilitate attachment to the shaft c. The metal, papier mÔchÚ, &c. guard a is formed in suitable lengths and of two segmental parts having at their ends, and, if desired, intermediately, internal semicircular collars b. Resilient steel &c. bands d, each subtending somewhat over 180‹ and arranged at intervals, have pegs e to enter holes f in the guard parts when the bands are sprung into position. Projections may alternatively be formed on the guard to engage holes in the bands, and the guard may be in more than two segmental parts.

Planing.-In wood-planing or like machines, the chain 10 which connects the cradle 7 for the top feed-rolls 5 with its loading lever 9, is connected to the lever by an adjustable connection, so that the chain may readily he altered in length to keep the lever level when the cradle is adjusted upwards or downwards. For this purpose the chain is attached to the lever by means of pivoted quadrant plates 16 which bear on the lever by means of adjustable cross pin 21. A pawl may replace the pin. engaging teeth on the quadrants, or the end of the chain may be led to a screwed bar engaging a nut on the end of the lever 9.

Abstract: 196,142. Robinson & Son, Ltd., T., Tweedale, J., and Robinson, C. J. Feb. 23, 1922. Machinery, utilizing inertia to obtain movements in.-Relates to the driving-mechanism of plan-sifters, dnesaem and other rotary and oscillatory machines which are worked by rotary cranks and balance-weights, and driven by a vertical freely-suspended shaft, and in which the crank-pin is adjustable radially ,in relation to the driving shaft. Fittings 5, 6, fixed to the driving shaft 1 and the crank-pin 4 respectively are arranged to engage and slide rectilinearly in relation to one another so as to vary the throw of the crank. A bolt 12 passes through holes in the fitting 6 and slots 13 in the sides of the fitting 5, while through the ends pass set-screws 14 which engage opposite sides of the bolt 12. By manipulating the screws 14, the position of the bolt and therefore the throw of the crank 4 can be adjusted, the parts then being locked 'by lock-nuts 15 on the set-screws.

Syringes.-The holder 2 for the needle 3 of a hypodermic syringe is split longitudinally and is provided at 5 with an external screw-thread for engagement with an internal screw-thread 9 on a conical ferrule 8 which covers practically the whole length of the split holder. Inclined co acting faces 6, 10 on the ferrule and split holder are provided to take up wear in the screwthreads. The holder may be formed by sweating the halves together, internally and externally threading and boring, and then slitting along the sweated edges.

Abstract: 158,912. Robinson & Son, Ltd., T., Robinson, C. J., and Stevenson, T. J. April 10, 1917. Conditioning and damping grain.-Moistened grain is treated with warm air having a regulated moisture content, and subsequently with a current of cold air to condition it. The grain from the hopper k falls down a conduit having perforated side walls b and solid end walls into the boot of an elevator l which delivers it to a hopper k and a second similarly constructed conduit from the bottom of which it is discharged in a cooled and conditioned state. The current of hot air is induced by a fan e placed above an ordinary cyclone separator f. The current from the fan passes through a pipe i to an ordinary airheater d and thence into a passage b arranged between the grain conduits and having passed through the grain in the conduit enters the separator f and the fan e. The current of cold air is induced by a second fan e placed over a second cyclone separator f . Cold air is drawn into a passage c formed at one side of the lower half of the second grain conduit, through the grain into a passage c and then into the entrance f of the separator f . If the warm air current is not sufficiently moist, water or steam may be sprayed into the passage b at the point g. The water used may be that collected in the separator f after having passed through a filter in the tank h.

Abstract: 149,089. Robinson & Son, T., Robinson, C. J., and Stevenson, T. J. May 16, 1919. Density separators.-In an apparatus for separating solid particles such as wood chips, husks, or shells of seeds &c. from air employed for carrying off such articles from machinery in which they are produced or given off, the dust-laden air enters, by a conduit 11, the cylindrical portion 5 of a separator 7 provided with a fan 3. The dust falls into a conduit 9 provided with duplex valve mechanism and the purified air passes into a similar but larger separator 8. The duplex valve mechanism, Fig. 2, comprises valves 15, 16 pivoted at 21, 22 to spring levers 19, 20 supported by cylinders 23, 24 carried by shafts 17, 18, the valves in their closed position abutting against the lower ends of board 25 mounted inside the conduit 9, being normally kept in this position by weighted bell-crank levers 26. To operate the valves so that one is open when the other is shut, bars 31 pivoted to the ends of the levers 26 are provided with recesses 35 which are engaged by pins 34 on toothed disks 32 connected by a chain and driven from a shaft. To assist the movement of the valves, spring- actuated rods 36 are operated, to pass down the ends of the valves, by cams 37 on the shafts 33 carrying the disks 32. Specification 1560/15 is referred to.
