Abstract: 495,243. Insulating conductors. SIMONS, P. Jan. 24, 1938. No. 2219. [Class 36] [Also in Group XXV] An electrical conductor is insulated by several layers of asbestos &c., the fibres of which lie obliquely to the axis of the conductor, the obliquity increasing from layer to layer. The wire 1 is covered with the fibrous web 2 in a single operation by drawing the wire 1 with the web attached to it at one edge through a spinning funnel 3. By using a long funnel, rotating at a high speed, the layers of fibres are laid obliquely to the wire with the outer fibres more oblique than the inner fibres. The innermost fibres lie substantially parallel to the wire. A paper band may be used as carrier for the web 2. The funnel may be ribbed or roughened internally and may be trumpet-shaped.

Abstract: 453,532. Coated fabrics. DEUTSCHE KUNSTLEDER - WERKE WOLFANG GES., Wolfgang, Hanau, and SIMONS, P., 41, Lrajanstrasse, Cologne, both in Germany. March 14, 1935, No. 7975. [Class 140] A process for producing artificial leather having an obliquely threaded fabric base, consists in first applying a thin preliminary coating of artificial leather composition by lightly surface coating, then cutting the fabric obliquely and further treating, e.g. by one or more additional coatings of composition, calendering, graining, &c., as required. The composition may be a cellulose derivative with softening agents, e.g. castor oil, tri-phenyl phosphate, with pigments and a solvent, or a rubber composition or rubber latex which may be pigmented. The composition may be applied to a straight-threaded fabric which is then sewn to form a tube with the coating inside. After the edges have been trimmed it is cut along a helical line, calendered, given a final coating of composition and then grained. Alternatively, a tube of straight - threaded fabric may be folded flat and the preliminary coating applied to the outside thereof, the fabric being further treated, as above. The fabric base may be stretched, e.g. so that the threads become inclined at about 70‹ to one another, before use the surface covering composition has been applied.
