A process for producing a 4-(un)substituted tetrahydropyran-4-carboxylic acid compound or an ester compound thereof which are represented by the formula (1): (1) (wherein R represents hydrogen or a hydrocarbon group; R represents hydrogen or an optionally substituted hydrocarbon group; and R represents hydrogen or a hydrocarbon group), characterized by reacting a 4-(un)substituted 4-cyanotetrahydropyran compound represented by the formula (2): (2) (wherein R and R are the same as defined above) with water or an alcohol which are represented by the formula (3): R OH (3) (wherein R is the same as defined above) in the presence of an acid or base.

A process for the production of 4-aminotetrahydropyrans represented by the general formula (2) and salts thereof with acids: [wherein R is hydrogen or a hydrocarbon group], characterized by subjecting a 4-hydrazinotetrahydropyran represented by the general formula (1) or a salt thereof with an acid: [wherein R is as defined above] to decomposition in the presence of at least one compound selected from among Raney nickel, noble metal catalysts, and metal oxides; intermediates for the process; and a process for the production of the intermediates.

Disclosed is a method for producing a 4-cyanotetrahydropyran-4-carboxylic acid ester represented by the general formula (4a) or (4b) below, which is characterized in that a bis(2-halogenoethyl) ether represented by the general formula (1) below, a cyanoacetic acid ester represented by the general formula (2) below and an alkali metal alkoxide represented by the general formula (3) below are reacted in an organic solvent. (1) (In the formula, X represents a halogen atom.) (2) (In the formula, R 1 represents an alkyl group having 2-6 carbon atoms.) (3) (In the formula, R 2 may be the same as or different from R 1 and represents an alkyl group having 1-6 carbon atoms, and M represents an alkali metal atom.)
