An adamantane derivative which can be a raw material compound for a polymer having excellent etching resistance and improved transparency to light of short wavelengths is produced from easily available raw materials by an economically advantageous method. A compound (10) is esterified with a compound (11) for obtaining a compound (12), and the compound (12) is fluorinated in a liquid phase, thereby obtaining a compound (13). Then, the compound (13) is subjected to hydrolysis or alcoholysis for obtaining a compound (2), and the compound (2) is reacted with a compound (15), thereby obtaining a compound (1). In this connection, A-J respectively represent -CFH- or -CF2-; R represents a perfluoroalkyl group or the like; X represents F or the like; Y represents H or OH; Y represents H or R COO-; Y represents H, F or R COO-; Y represents H, F, R COO- or OH; Y represents H, F, -OCOCR =CH2 or OH; R represents a hydrogen atom, a methyl group or the like; and X represents OH or a halogen atom.

Disclosed is a fluorine-containing compound which enables to easily form a thin film having a water repellent, hydrophilic pattern by using a relatively low-energy ultraviolet light. A thin film having a water repellent, hydrophilic pattern is obtained by forming a thin film using a fluorine-containing compound represented by the formula (1) below, and irradiating the thin film with an ultraviolet light. (1) (In the formula (1), R , R , R and R independently represent a hydrogen atom, a halogen atom or a monovalent organic group, and at least one of them is a monovalent organic group having a fluorine atom; R represents a hydrogen atom or a monovalent organic group; R represents a monovalent organic group; and A represents a heteroatom.)
