Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a system and method for constructing and using a model of memorability in computing and communications applications, which facilitate access to information. SOLUTION: A design and analysis are provided for timeline visualizations in connection with displaying results to queries based at least in part on an index of content. The query is received by a query component (which can be part of a search engine that provides a unified index of information a user has been exposed to). The query component parses the query into portions relevant to effecting a meaningful search. The query component can access and populate a data store which may include information searched for. A landmark component receives and/or accesses information from the query component as well as the data store, and anchors public and/or personal landmark events to search result-related information. Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a system for constructing a retrieval query on the basis of a feature extracted from a multidimensional input after analyzing the input.SOLUTION: In a specific example, an image can be used as an input to a retrieval mechanism. Pattern recognition and an image analysis are applied to the image, and a retrieval query corresponding to a feature extracted from the image input after the application can be constructed. Further, the system indexes multidimensional retrievable items and can thereby facilitate the extraction of the items as a result of the retrieval query. In a more detailed manner, by using a text analysis, and a pattern and/or language recognition mechanism, the system can extracts features from the retrievable items. By using the extracted features, the system can index the retrievable items.
Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a system and methodology enabling a variety of information associated with notification sources to be directed to notification sinks via a notification platform architecture.SOLUTION: An architecture 10 includes a context analyzer 22 for determining a user's state such as location and attentional focus, wherein the user's state is employed by a notification manager 24 to make decisions regarding what, when and how information generated by notification sources 26-28 should be forwarded to notification sinks 36-38, for example. These decisions can include a cost benefit analysis wherein considerations are given as to whether the benefits of notifying the user are outweighed by the costs of disrupting the user. Decision-theoretic policies and/or somewhat less formal heuristic policies can be employed to enable the decision-making process within the notification manager 24.
Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide systems and methods for constructing predictive models, based on statistical machine learning, that can make forecasts about traffic flows and congestions, based on an abstraction of a traffic system into a set of random variables, including variables that represent the amount of time until there will be congestion at key trouble spots and the time until congestions will resolve. SOLUTION: Observational data includes traffic flows and dynamics, and other context data such as the time of day and day of week, holidays, school status, the timing and nature of major gatherings such as sporting events, weather reports, traffic incident reports, and construction and closure reports. The prediction methods are used in alerting, the display graphical information about predictions about congestion on desktop on mobile devices, and in offline and real-time automated route recommendations and planning. Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To use decision making of discrimination and status dependent in processing of communication which contains channel selection, routing and schedule changing operation. SOLUTION: In this system and method, a service is provided wherein a user can evaluate preference about real-time call handling, and dynamic decision making about the optimal timing and the optimal channel of communication to a person is performed. This service can be executed on the basis of various cost benefit analyses which draw communication in consideration of interruption cost and preference of a contactor and a contactee and/or based on decision making under unreliable status. A statistical model learned from data is combined with user's preference, expected cost of interruption is formed based on user's status of operation, place and calendar information, and evaluation of preference. Furthermore, statistical prediction provides existence prediction and availability prediction. The above method is a high communication system to a person wherein value is maximized and communication cost can be suppressed to minimum. COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To facilitate efficient and automated processing of messages. SOLUTION: A bulk filter is provided to categorize one or more received messages, according to a range of classification, the range spanning from at least a bulk classification of values to a non-bulk classification of values. A second filter is provided to further classify the received messages, in order to automatically facilitate processing of the messages. The range of classification includes a continuum of values, based on a likelihood that the received messages are determined to tend toward or fall within the bulk classification of values or toward/within the non-bulk classification of values. Also, the bulk filter or filters can include an adjustable threshold setting, to determine or define differences between the bulk classifications and the non-bulk classifications. PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a system and a method which mitigate the intrusiveness of communications between message senders and receivers to facilitate more courteous, seamless, and timely interactions. SOLUTION: In one aspect, instant messaging and other forms of communications, such as push-to-talk voice communications, can be improved via employment of time-bounded policies and parameters. When-Free communications allows users to send When-Free messages, and the When-Free messages act as near-instant messages that wait until a user or recipient is not in one of a list of states defined as busy or unavailable states. A sender can encode how long a message is to remain alive before being erased or retracted or shifted to another communication modality, with a quick gesture or via a standing profile. PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform navigation via a data set with a plurality of magnifications in mobile or other environment. SOLUTION: This navigation system is provided with an input component which receives user input including a pointing device, a navigation component which facilitates navigation of contents displayed on a portable device screen partially based on at least one of speed and a position of the input component relevant to the contents and a mapping component which smoothly shifts the present view to a new view or the previous view and directs the contents and/or the view in the portable device screen partially based on data received from the navigation component. PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To utilize approximate device locations, determined from changes in the sensed strength of radio signals at different locations. SOLUTION: In one example, approximate device locations are based on inference procedures for processing through the use of ambient commercial radio signals for estimating the location or the probability distribution over the locations of the device. In another example, approximate device locations derived from learning and an inference method applied to rank vector of signal strength vectors are utilized. This invention utilizes approximations for a device location based on a method that does not require a substantial number of available ambient signal strengths, while still providing useful location inferences in determining locations. Several location-centric services are supported, including the receipt of location-specific information, such as the traffic information, emergency information, transmission about the device locations, and time-sensitive promotions, such as discounts offered by businesses for load-dispersing the services provided. Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a system and a method for controlling and presenting information to a user in an automated manner. SOLUTION: Sets of information items accessible by the user from computer work spaces are automatically hidden or reduced from view in order to facilitate user processing of a determined and/or reduced subset of information. The reduced subset is created from decision-theoretic considerations of the expected costs and benefits of hiding or reducing information items from view or presentation while leaving more likely items or objects exposed for efficient access by the user. The control of the optimization may be facilitated by preference-assessment interfaces that allow a designer and/or a user to assess preferences about the costs of reviewing sets of items of different lengths and about the costs of gestures to reveal additional items.
