Abstract: A frame structure of a document input device comprising: a base frame member (38) formed as a resin molded article, and having a base (40) and an annular frame (42) extending integrally with and substantially upwardly from said base as side walls; a top frame member made of a metal and having a top plate (32) with an opening (110) and side walls extending integrally with and downwardly from said top plate, said top frame member forming an outer frame of the device in combination with said base frame member; a glass plate (34) covering the opening (110) of said top plate (32); a carrier shaft (30) arranged in said base frame member (38); an optical reading unit (28) capable of moving along said carrier shaft (30); a positioning and engaging unit (130,132) arranged in said top frame member for engagement with at least one of said carrier shaft (30) and said optical reading unit (28) to determine the position of said optical reading unit in a direction in parallel with said glass plate (34) passing through said carrier shaft and perpendicular to said glass plate passing through said carrier shaft; and an automatic paper feeding unit mounted on said top frame member.

Abstract: A paper feed roller (5) is divided into a first roller (5a) and a second roller (5b), and a slit (58) allowing the passage of about 10 to about 20 sheets of paper is defined between the first roller and a gate plate (57) opposing the first roller, so that a sheet of paper fed out via this slit can be supplied between the second roller (5b) and a separation pad (7) in contact with the second roller. A biassing force of a spring for transferring paper is converted by a slide cam sliding in a direction parallel to the paper feed roller, and a paper width detection sensor is assembled in a snap-in structure.
