PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and apparatus for controlling transmission power of a base station in soft handoff. SOLUTION: Transmitters 20, 32 are attached to a separated control unit 12 through communication links. The control unit 12 then derives the most likely command stream to be sent to a base station. In a second exemplary embodiment, the control unit periodically receives the final or average transmission level in a period and an aggregate quality measure for the feedback during a period from each of the transmitters. The control unit 12 determines the aligned power level and transmits a message indicative of the aligned power level to the transmitters. In a third exemplary embodiment, the transmitters 20, 32 send a message indicative of the transmission power of transmission to the receiver. PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a system for forward link power control that minimizes the overhead required to send power control commands from a mobile station back to a base station. SOLUTION: This invention relates to a method and an apparatus for controlling transmit power levels of a plurality of different data streams (120, 120A, 122, 122A, 124, 124A) transmitted from at least one base station to a mobile station in a mobile radio communication system. The first and second data streams are transmitted from the base station and received at the mobile station. A stream of power control commands is formed at the mobile station in accordance with either the first or second received data stream. A power control signal is formed at the mobile station from the first stream of power control commands and transmitted to the base station. A received stream of power control commands is formed from the received power control signal at the base station, and the transmit power levels of the first and second data streams from the base station are controlled in accordance with the received stream of power control commands. PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and apparatus for providing link quality feedback to a base station.SOLUTION: A periodic link quality message is transmitted on a channel controlled by a gate while continuous differential indicators are transmitted. Between quality messages, the differential indicators track the quality of the link. The periodic quality messages synchronize transmitters and receivers of remote stations 36, 38. Coding is applied to feedback information identifying the transmitters. A remote station includes a differential analyzer to determine change in successive channel quality messages. In an alternate embodiment, link quality feedback information is controlled by a gate according to channel condition.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To puncture symbols in a communication system. SOLUTION: S symbols are received for a frame having a capacity of N symbols, with S being greater than N. P symbols need to be punctured so that remaining symbols fit into the frame. The number of puncture distances, D1 through DN, are computed based on S and P. A particular number of symbol punctures is determined for each computed puncture distance. P1 through PN symbol punctures are then performed at the distances of D1 through DN, respectively. For a more even distribution of the symbol punctures, each of the distances D1 through DN can be selected to be greater than or equal to a minimum puncture distance Dmin defined as Dmin=[S/P], where []denotes a floor operator.
