Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a phase change ink composition containing a synergist for pigment dispersion.SOLUTION: A phase change ink composition comprises: a pigment; a carrier; a dispersant; and a synergist, where (a) for a given sample of the synergist, about 80 to about 100% of the sample has a volume average particle diameter of about 50 to about 200 nm; (b) the synergist has a surface area of about 30 to about 100 m/g; and (c) the synergist has a density of about 0.6 to about 2 g/cm. The synergist is a mixture of a sulfone group-substituted copper phthalocyanine isomer mixture and ammonium ions having H or Calkyl groups.
Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide improved digital ink jet phase change white inks that are suitable for ink jet printing processes and for acoustic ink jet printing processes, that can provide excellent print quality on colored package substrates (including colored cardboard or thick paper, particularly of brown or other darker colors), that can provide desirable esthetic appearance and appeal of white prints over dark substrates, and that realize improved storage stability and low Newtonian viscosity.SOLUTION: A phase change ink comprises: an acoustically treated white colorant, where the white colorant has been subjected to acoustic mixing at an acceleration of about 30 to about 110 g; a colorant dispersant, where the colorant dispersant has optionally been subjected to acoustic mixing at an acceleration of about 30 to about 110 g; an optional synergist; an optional fluorescent dye; and a phase change ink carrier comprising (i) a branched triamide and (ii) a polyethylene wax, a Fischer Tropsch wax, or a mixture or combination thereof.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a phase change ink improved in scratch resistance and fold resistance compared to the prior art while preserving desired characteristics of phase change ink, particularly while preserving desired characteristics of pigmented solid inks, including Newtonian rheology, good filtration properties, thermal stability, and ink jetting robustness.SOLUTION: A phase change ink composition comprises a wax, an optional colorant, and a modified polysaccharide salt, particularly a modified carboxymethylcellulose, so that the phase change ink is excellent in scratch resistance and fold resistance while preserving characteristics of pigmented solid inks, including Newtonian rheology, good filtration properties, thermal stability, and ink jetting robustness.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide: improved colorants suitable for use in phase change inks that are natural or derived from natural sources and thus environmentally friendly; and phase change ink compositions containing suitable composite materials that contain natural-based materials and/or biodegradable materials.SOLUTION: A phase change ink composition includes: a wax; an optional dispersant; an optional synergist; and a naturally-derived colorant, which is either a colorant derived from a plant, a colorant derived from an insect, or a mixture or combination thereof. The naturally-derived colorant is derived from a member of the group consisting of tetrapyrroles, tetra-terpenoids, quinines, O-heterocyclic compounds, N-heterocyclic compounds, metallo-proteins, or a mixture or combination thereof. The synergist is indigocarmine or the like modified using an aliphatic or aromatic quaternary ammonium compound.
