    Abstract: Ionic impurities are removed from water-insoluble solid particles by mixing the solids with ion-exchange particles in a mixing zone 7 through which water flows upwardly into a disengaging zone 9 where the velocity of the water is reduced so that the purified solid particles move upwards and are removed at 23 and the ion exchange particles move downwards and are removed from the bottom of the mixing zone. The ion exchange solids should have a larger particle size or density than the other solids; separation may be assisted by providing a screen filter 21. The solid particles to be purified are mixed with water at 15 and enter the mixing zone through line 19. The ion exchange solids enter through line 51 and well 53 and after passage through the mixing zone leave through stripping zone 5, settling zone 3, and line 55; after treatment with regeneration liquid introduced at 57, they pass through filter 59 and are recycled to line 51. The slurry of purified solid particles in line 23 passes to cyclone separator 27, filter 31, and drier 35; water from separator 27 may be heated at 43 and returned to the mixing vessel 15 or to stripping zone 5; water from filter 31 passes to settling zone 3. The mixing zone may operate at a temperature of 32 DEG -212 DEG F. A cation exchange resin may be used for the removal of sodium ions from gels of silica or alumina, or mixed gels of silica, alumina, and magnesia which are to be employed as cracking catalysts. An anion exchange resin may be used for the removal of sulphate ions from zinc-alumina spinel which is to be mixed with molybdena to provide a hydroforming catalyst; the anion exchange material may contain hydroxide, acetate or nitrate ions. Reference is also made to the treatment of oxide gels of magnesium zinc, chromium, zirconium, titanium, iron, beryllium, copper, cobalt, and nickel, and clays, for example acid-treated clay catalysts.
