Abstract: A method for investigating visual appearance of a sample surface using a handheld measuring device is disclosed. A combined image (140) of a measurement area on the sample surface is obtained using at least one integrated light source and at least one integrated camera of the handheld measuring device and is displayed on a display device. The combined image is a combination of a first image (110) and a second image (120) under directional illumination. The first image (110) is acquired with a first measurement geometry, in which the observation direction is oriented at a first aspecular angle having an absolute value of at least 30°, and the second image (120) is acquired with a second measurement geometry, in which the observation direction is oriented at a second aspecular angle having an absolute value of not more than 15°. In this manner, the combined image provides a realistic color impression while ensuring that defects are well visible.

The first and second multi-pass cells can be biconic multipass cells with a the first optical fiber bundle (102) directed toward a first D-mirror (126), which is directed toward a T-mirror (128), which is directed toward a second D-mirror (130), which is directed toward the second optical fiber bundle (108). The D-mirrors can be on an opposite end of the first multi-pass cell (104) from the T-mirror (128) and the first and second optical fiber bundles.
