Abstract: A friction stir welding (FSW) tool includes a pin, a housing, and a shoulder. The pin is configured to extend through a joint line between edges of two work pieces. The pin rotates to perform a FSW process that welds the two work pieces together at the joint line. The housing is coupled to a distal end of the pin to enable rotation of the pin relative to the housing. The pin extends through a support surface of the housing. The support surface contacts respective inner surfaces of the work pieces during the FSW process. The shoulder surrounds the pin and is configured to be rotated during the FSW process. The shoulder contacts respective outer surfaces of the work pieces during the FSW process such that the work pieces are sandwiched between the shoulder and the support surface of the housing.

Abstract: A method is provided for horizon detection. The method includes acquiring an image that depicts a view of an environment, and defining a line pattern of lines that divide the image into respective pairs of image segments. The line pattern is formed of lines that are parallel, or intersecting at a common point of intersection. The method incudes searching the lines of the line pattern to identify one of the lines as an estimated true horizon in the image that divides the image into a respective pair of image segments at a boundary of greatest difference in average brightness between the image segments from among the respective pairs of image segments. The method includes determining true horizon in the image from the estimated true horizon. The method may also include an evaluation of the estimated true horizon or the true horizon as to verify one or more expected characteristics.

Abstract: A device for detecting a coating applied to a surface includes a portable housing, a light source, a light detector, and a processing unit. The light source emits a first light having a first wavelength. The coating includes a fluorophore that re-emits a second light having a second wavelength, which is different than the first wavelength, in response to excitation by the first light. The light detector receives the second light re-emitted from the coating. The processing unit is adapted to determine a re-emission intensity of the second light and to determine a coverage metric of the coating based on the re-emission intensity of the second light. The coverage metric is then used to infer the efficacy of the coating.

Abstract: Disclosed is a synthetic aperture radar (SAR) system for target recognition with complex range profile. The SAR system comprising a memory, a recurrent neural network (RNN), a multi-layer linear network in signal communication the RNN, and a machine-readable medium on the memory. The machine-readable medium is configured to store instructions that, when executed by the RNN, cause the SAR system to perform various operations. The various operation comprise: receiving raw SAR data associated with observed views of a scene, wherein the raw SAR data comprises information captured via the SAR system; radio frequency (RF) preprocessing the received raw SAR data to produce a processed raw SAR data; converting the processed raw SAR data to a complex SAR range profile data; processing the complex SAR range profile data with the RNN having RNN states; and mapping the RNN states to a target class with the multi-layer linear network.

Abstract: A probing system includes a device-under-test, a probe device, and a die bonder. The device-under-test includes test patterns. The probe device includes tilt angle sensors. The tilt angle sensors include spikes that protrude from the probe device. The die bonder is operational to mount the device-under-test, mount the probe device facing the device-under-test, compress the probe device and the device-under-test together to causes a subset of the spikes to contact the test patterns, measure a number of connections formed between the tilt angle sensors and the test patterns, determine a first offset angle and a second offset angle between the device-under-test and the probe device based on the number of connections, adjust the spherical positioner in one or more rotational axes in response to the first offset angle and the second offset angle to change a parallelism between the device-under-test and the probe device.

Abstract: Secondary barriers for aircraft are disclosed. An example secondary barrier includes a plurality of tracks to mount to a first monument in a cabin of an aircraft and a plurality of rods, where respective ones of the rods slidably engage respective ones of the tracks. The secondary barrier includes a panel coupled to respective ends of the rods. The rods to move relative to the tracks between a stowed position and a deployed position. The panel in the deployed position is to interface with a second monument in the cabin opposite the first monument. The rods are to extend between the first monument and the second monument when the secondary barrier is in the deployed position.
