    Abstract: Techniques are described for passive three-dimensional image sensing based on referential image blurring. For example, a filter mask is integrated with a lens assembly to provide one or more normal imaging bandpass (NIB) regions and one or more reference imaging bandpass (RIB) regions, the regions being optically distinguishable and corresponding to different focal lengths and/or different focal paths. As light rays from a scene object pass through the different regions of the filter mask, a sensor can detect first and second images responsive to those light rays focused through the NIB region and the RIB region, respectively (according to their respective focal lengths and/or respective focal paths). An amount of blurring between the images can be measured and correlated to an object distance for the scene object. Some embodiments project additional reference illumination to enhance blurring detection in the form of reference illumination flooding and/or spotted illumination.

    Abstract: Techniques are described for three-dimensional (3D) image sensing based on passive optical techniques and dynamic calibration. For example, light reflected from one or more objects in a scene is received via a lens of a novel 3D imaging system to forms an image of the object(s) on an image sensor through a spatial filter. A distribution of mask elements are associated with corresponding signal pixel sets of the image sensor, and reference elements of the spatial filter are associated with corresponding reference pixel sets of the image sensor; such that portions of the image tend to be shadowed by the mask elements at the signal pixel sets, but not at the reference pixel sets. Object distances for the one or more objects in the scene can be computed as a function of signal brightness detected by the signal pixel sets and reference brightness detected by the reference pixel sets.

    Abstract: An optical fingerprint sensor module includes a light source configured to provide illumination light directed toward a finger, a portion of the illumination light is scattered or reflected off of the finger, thereby generating signal light. The optical fingerprint sensor module further includes a photodiode array having a surface, a lens having an optical axis that forms an angle with respect to a normal of the surface of the photodiode array that is between 45 degrees and 135 degrees, a member defining a pinhole that is positioned off of the optical axis of the lens. The lens and pinhole are configured to focus the signal light onto the surface of the photodiode array. The optical fingerprint sensor module further includes electronic circuitries configured to process electrical signals generated by the photodiode array to produce an image of a fingerprint pattern of the finger.

    Abstract: A method of secure access of an electronic system using optical palmprint sensing includes storing palmprint ID data of an authorized user in a computer memory, determining whether a trigger event has occurred, acquiring one or more images of the person's palm using an optical palmprint sensor, in response to determining that the trigger event has occurred, comparing the one or more images of the person's palm to the palmprint ID data, and determining whether there exists a match between the one or more images of the person's palm and the palmprint ID data based on the comparison. The method further includes, in response to determining that the match does not exist, denying access to the electronic system; and in response to determining that the match exists, granting access to the electronic system based at least on the match.

    Abstract: Devices, systems, and techniques are provided for performing human fingerprint detection and authentication for authenticating a request to access a locked mobile device equipped with a fingerprint detection module. In one aspect, responsive to detecting a contact from an object with the fingerprint detection module, described technique can be used to determines whether the contact from the object is from human skin. When determined that the detected contact from the object is from human skin, a presence of a human fingerprint can be detected from the object making contact. The detected fingerprint data can be obtained from the object and compared against stored fingerprint profiles associated with an authorized user of the locked mobile device. Based on the comparing, the request to access the locked mobile device can be granted.
