Abstract:
In an air intake device, a throttle body is sandwiched between an air cleaner case and an intake manifold which are connected in direct contact with each other. A gasket for preventing an air leakage is provided between the air cleaner case and the intake manifold radially outside the throttle body. Alternatively, crushable thin projections are provided on the top and the bottom surfaces of the flange. When the flange is sandwiched between the case and the intake manifold, the thin projections are crushed to provide seals therebetween.
Abstract:
A process for making a cast article from an aluminum alloy includes first casting an article from an alloy having the following composition, in weight percent: Silicon 11.0-14.0 Copper 5.6-8.0 Iron 0-0.8 Magnesium 0.5-1.5 Nickel 0.05-0.9 Manganese 0-1.0 Titanium 0.05-1.2 Zirconium 0.12-1.2 Vanadium 0.05-1.2 Zinc 0.05-0.9 Strontium 0.001-0.1 Aluminum balance In this alloy the ration of silicon:magnesium is 10-25, and the ratio of copper:magnesium is 4-15. After an article is cast from the alloy, the cast article is aged at a temperature within the range of 400° F. to 500° F. for a time period within the range of four to 16 hours. It has been found especially advantageous if the cast article is first exposed to a solutionizing step prior to the aging step. This solutionizing step is carried out by exposing the cast article to a temperature within the range of 900° F. to 1000° F. for a time period of fifteen minutes to four hours. It has also been found to be especially advantageous if the solutionizing step is followed directly with a quenching step, wherein the cast article is quenched in a quenching medium such as water at a temperature within the range of 120° F. to 300° F. The resulting cast article is suitable in a number of high temperature applications, such as heavy-duty pistons for internal combustion engines.
Abstract:
An electronic throttle control system having a housing and cover member with a throttle valve, gear mechanism, motor, and failsafe or default mechanism. A spring member positioned between the housing and sector gear member which is attached to the throttle valve shaft, biases the throttle valve plate member toward the closed position. A spring-biased plunger member biases the throttle plate member from its closed position to a default or nulllimp-homenull position. In order to reduce contact between the spring member of the default mechanism and the plunger member, the spring member can have an hourglass shape and/or the outer surface of the plunger member can be minimized.
Abstract:
A piston (20) for an internal combustion engine includes an upper crown (22) and a lower crown (24) that are each fabricated using a same strong material, such as steel and fastened together using a plurality of fasteners (50). The piston (20) provides increased strength resulting in improved design flexibility and smaller sized engines that produce the same amount of power. Piston ring grooves (100, 102, 104) are also provided in either one or both of the upper and lower crowns (22, 24) which control piston combustion height. A deeper combustion bowl (72) is also available with the piston (20).
Abstract:
The present invention includes a light metal cylinder block comprising a cylinder running face which is coated with silicon. The invention also includes a method by which the silicon is applied to the running face comprising melting powdered metal silicon, which is fired at the face in a powdered metal beam, under heat of a laser which is fired at the running face at the point of impact of the powdered beam. Furthermore, the invention includes a device with which the cylinder block may be manufactured.
Abstract:
The present invention relates to a cylinder head and motor block casting and a method of making the same, including an aluminum alloy having the following composition: Si 6.80-7.20, Fe 0.35-0.45, Cu 0.30-0.40, Mn 0.25-0.30, Mg 0.35-0.45, Ni 0.45-0.55 Zn 0.10-0.15, Ti 0.11-0.15 with the remainder being aluminum as well as unavoidable impurities with a maximum content of 0.05 each, but not more than a maximum of 0.15 impurities in all.
Abstract:
A composite piston and method for forming such a piston for a reciprocating machine such as an internal combustion engine. A blank is formed from a pair of dissimilar alloys, one of which has substantially greater properties such as strength or abrasion resistance. The blank is formed by a process whereby he two materials are initially bonded and extruded into a composite blank. The blank is forged into a piston in such a way that the two materials are bonded together in the forging process. The higher strength and/or abrasion resistance material forms at least a part of the outer surface of the piston in areas where the better properties are required. The other material backs up the higher strength or hardness material in necessary areas so as to provide an integral structure that has lightweight, low costs and nevertheless the desired properties.
Abstract:
A slide member is made of an aluminum alloy and compositely reinforced at its sliding surface by a reinforcing material. The reinforcing material is a mixture of alumina short fibers consisting of not less than 80 wt. % alumina and the remainder silica and having 5-60 wt. % alpha alumina content, and non-spherical mullite particles consisting of 40-86 wt. % alumina and the remainder silica and having 3-60 microns mean diameter. The volumetric percentages of the alumina short fibers and the mullite particles are 2-12% and 5-25%, respectively, on the basis of the volume of the reinforced portion.
Abstract:
The invention relates to a method for producing a housing (12) for a throttle valve connection piece (10), which housing is to have particularly high dimensional stability. For this purpose, the housing (12), which has a throttle orifice (16) for a throttle valve (20), is produced from plastic (14) by the injection molding method, plastic (14) being partially injected around a metal cylinder (28) which, at least in the region of the throttle valve (20), forms the throttle orifice (16). In this case, before the injection molding method, an expanding mandrel (50) is expanded against the inner face (33) of the metal cylinder (28). During the injection molding method, the inner face (33) of the metal cylinder (28) is supported at least partially by the expanding mandrel (50). After the injection molding method, a reduction in the outer circumference (80) of the expanding mandrel (50) is carried out in order to remove the expanding mandrel (50) from the interior (70) of the metal cylinder (28).
