Abstract: A capacitive force sensor is comprised of a base (1) containing a capacitance electrode (3), a cover (8) containing a second capacitance electrode (9) and spacers (7) separating these two components. The material thickness of the base (1) and the cover (8) is such that when a force is applied at least one of the materials constituting the base (1), the cover (8) and the spacers (7) will be compressed to such a degree that a decrease in the distance between the capacitance electrodes (3,9) will result but the materials bridging the areas between the spacers (7) will not be deformed.

Abstract: For detecting strains or breaks in the surface of a boat hull or other structure, the surface is covered with non-intersecting lengths of tape adhered to the surface. The tape has an inner strip of conductive elastomer and an outer strip of the same material, and between them a corrugated layer of copper foil. Both strips and the foil are insulated from each other and the outside. The strips and foil layer are connected to electrical resistance and capacitance measuring devices, which monitor any changes in the electrical properties of the tape lengths, caused by strain or breaking of the surface. Because of the corrugations, the foil will not change its resistance when the tape is elongated or compressed.

Abstract: A weight and pressure measuring device, comprising a fluid filled cushion pad of limited volume, connected to a pressure indicator to measure the pressure produced during pressure loading. Such a measuring device requires little space, is lightweight, and can easily be transported and used. A blood pressure and weight measuring device has an inflatable sleeve which is connected through a tube connection, with a pump device and a pressure measuring device. In order to measure blood pressure as well as weight, by means of such a measuring device, a second inflatable device, with a limited volume, is connected with the pressure measuring device and the pump device. The device measures the pressure produced by the weight load, which is proportional to the weight being determined.

Abstract: Two pairs of parallel plate electrodes forming respectively a sensor capacitor and a reference capacitor are mounted on a parallelogram structure designed to deform under load in such a way that the gap width of the sensor capacitor changes as a function of load while the gap width of the reference capacitor is unaffected by the load. The capacitance of the reference capacitor is, however, similarly affected by temperature, humidity and other physical properties which may affect the dielectric constant of the medium, and is available for use in a ratio circuit to compensate for spurious changes in the sensor capacitance.

Abstract: A capacitive dynamometer comprises an elastic body with a measuring cavity which is deformed in different directions when a mechanical force to be measured is applied to the elastic body. Deformation of the inner wall of the cavity in different directions are picked up in the form of changes of capacity in opposite senses by means of capacitor electrodes co-operating with the inner wall. By applying these changes of capacity to a differential capacity measuring device, a signal may be obtained which is representative of the force to be measured and is not influenced by changes of temperature, because these will change the capacity values of all electrodes in the same sense.

Abstract: A device comprises for sensing or measuring loads, especially transient loads, such as a load imposed by a wheel of a vehicle driving over the device. The device comprises two electrically conductive plates and an intermediate dielectric and elastomeric or elastic material. In a central plane of the dielectric material a series of threads of steel wire is embedded. Said threads are connected together electrically at one end. At least two spaced capacitor electrodes are constituted by one plate and said threads. The dielectric and elastomeric material is adapted to be engaged by the load and the variation in the capacitance is linearly proportional to the magnitude of the applied load. The two plates are pressed towards each other in order to cause a mechanical preloading of the intermediate material in order to give said linear proportionality.

Abstract: One or more computing devices, systems, and/or methods are provided. In an example, a method includes tuning a sensor comprising a first resonator having an effective gain, a second resonator having an effective loss, and a coupling circuit connected between the first resonator and the second resonator at an extrema degeneracy point with a nonlinear response to a force applied to the sensor. At least one of the first resonator, the second resonator, or the coupling circuit comprises a variable capacitor having a capacitance that varies as a function of the force. The method comprises injecting an input signal into one of the first resonator or the second resonator, receiving an output signal from one of the first resonator or the second resonator, and determining a magnitude of a force based on a difference between a first frequency extrema point and a second frequency extrema point in the output signal.
