Abstract: A transmitting apparatus and a receiving apparatus are provided. The transmitting apparatus includes: an encoder configured to generate a low density parity check (LDPC) codeword by performing LDPC encoding; an interleaver configured to interleave the LDPC codeword; and a modulator configured to modulate the interleaved LDPC codeword according to a modulation method to generate a modulation symbol. The interleaver is formed of a plurality of columns each including a plurality of rows and includes a block interleaver configured to divide each of the plurality of columns into a first part and a second part and interleave the LDPC codeword, the number of rows constituting each column divided into the first part is determined differently depending upon the modulation method, wherein the number of rows constituting each column divided into the second part is determined depending upon the number of rows constituting each column divided into the first part.

Abstract: Communication systems are described that use signal constellations, which have unequally spaced (i.e. ‘geometrically’ shaped) points. In many embodiments, the communication systems use specific geometric constellations that are capacity optimized at a specific SNR. In addition, ranges within which the constellation points of a capacity optimized constellation can be perturbed and are still likely to achieve a given percentage of the optimal capacity increase compared to a constellation that maximizes dmin, are also described. Capacity measures that are used in the selection of the location of constellation points include, but are not limited to, parallel decode (PD) capacity and joint capacity.

Abstract: A method for downlink link adaptation includes receiving, from a satellite and at a user terminal, a first data packet data unit according to a first downlink modulation and coding scheme (MCS), computing error vector magnitude data associated with the first data packet data unit, generating, based on one or more of the error vector magnitude data, user terminal signal-to-noise-ratio feedback based on a constant times a previous user terminal signal-to-noise-ratio and a current user terminal signal-to-noise-ratio, and transmitting an uplink packet data unit having a downlink block error rate and the user terminal signal-to-noise-ratio feedback. A satellite runs a link adaptation algorithm based on the user terminal signal-to-noise-ratio feedback and block error rate to generate a second downlink MCS. The method includes receiving at the user terminal a second data packet data unit according to the second downlink MCS for the satellite-to-user-terminal downlink. Uplink link adaptation is also disclosed.

Abstract: This disclosure provides systems, methods and apparatus, including computer programs encoded on computer storage media, for non-linearity estimation techniques for digital post distortion (DPoD) in a wireless system. In some aspects, a first wireless device may estimate a power amplifier (PA) non-linearity associated with a second wireless device using select signaling from the second wireless device. For example, the first wireless device may use a received signal to estimate the PA non-linearity if a dynamic power range associated with the signal triggers the estimation of the PA non-linearity (such as if the dynamic power range associated with the signal satisfies, or is expected to satisfy, a threshold dynamic power range). If the dynamic power range of the signal triggers the estimation of the PA non-linearity, the first wireless device may introduce DPoD to signaling received from the second wireless device in accordance with the estimation of the PA non-linearity.

Abstract: Communication systems are described that use unequally spaced constellations that have increased capacity compared to conventional constellations operating within a similar SNR band. One embodiment is a digital communications system including a transmitter transmitting signals via a communication channel, the transmitter including a coder capable of receiving user bits and outputting encoded bits at a rate, a mapper capable of mapping encoded bits to symbols in a constellation, and a modulator capable of generating a modulated signal for transmission via the communication channel using symbols generated by the mapper, wherein the constellation is unequally spaced and characterizable by assignment of locations and labels of constellation points to maximize parallel decode capacity of the constellation at a given signal-to-noise ratio so that the constellation provides a given capacity at a reduced signal-to-noise ratio compared to a uniform constellation that maximizes the minimum distance between constellation points of the uniform constellation.
