Abstract: A single-skinned composite lattice sandwich structure includes a face sheet, fiber stringers, and at least one fiber tow arranged in a lattice structure separating the face sheet and fiber stringers. The face sheet and at least the fiber tow(s) forming the lattice may be interfused with a matrix to form a contiguous composite structure. The fiber stringers may be formed of various materials for imparting different structural properties to the sandwich structure, including carbon fiber for tensile strength and lightness, metallic or other rigid material for imparting overall structural rigidity, shape-changing material or actuated material for providing actuated deformation of the structure, and may also include sensors.

Abstract: The location and morphology of an electrostatically manipulated flame can be controlled through the action of an electrostatic field on the flame, virtually independently of overall mixture composition and imposed strain rate. An electrostatically controlled burner can manipulate a position of a flame between an oxidizer source and a fuel source by way of one or more electrodes configured to produce an electrostatic field proximate to one of the fuel source and the oxidizer source.

Abstract: A method for secure device-to-device communication using multilayered ciphers is provided. A selected cipher is employed to generate a pair of encryption/decryption keystreams for enabling multilayered encryption/decryption on a pulsed-index communication (PIC) packet(s). In examples discussed herein, a first layer encryption/decryption is performed by encrypting/decrypting a PIC data(s) (PD(s)) in the PIC packet(s) based on a first of the pair of encryption/decryption keystreams. In addition, a second layer encryption/decryption is performed by encrypting/decrypting selected control information (e.g., information related to encoding/decoding the PD(s)) in the PIC packet(s) based on a second of the pair of encryption/decryption keystreams. By performing multilayered encryption/decryption on the PIC packet(s), it is possible to defend against malicious attacks in single-channel device-to-device communication without compromising such key performance indicators (KPIs) as complexity, latency, power consumption, and footprint.

Abstract: A delayed-activation sensor system includes at least one microsensor. The microsensor may include at least one sensor module for sensing a condition in an environment and a dissolvable coating encapsulating at least a portion of the at least one sensor module such that the dissolvable coating prevents the at least one sensor module from sensing the condition in the environment. The dissolvable coating may be dissolvable in a fluid in the environment such that the sensor module is activated after being located in the environment for a period of time. The microsensor may also include at least one energy harvester module to generate electrical power for the microsensor from the environment.

Abstract: In this work, we present a novel receiving device design for communications systems that incorporates multiple antennas at the transmitting device/receiving device. Unlike existing systems, the new system does not require prior knowledge of the channel state information (CSI) at the receiving device side to extract the information symbols from the received signal. Consequently, complexity reduction and bit error rate improvement can be jointly achieved. Moreover, the new system may offer spectral efficiency enhancement since it does not require nulling to prevent the pilot symbols as in the case of conventional systems. The results obtained show that in certain scenarios the proposed system can offer up to 15 dB of bit error rate improvement over conventional systems. Moreover, the new system can provide about 16.6% of the spectral efficiency improvement.

Abstract: A method and device for determining the flow rate of the wet gas using real-time THz imaging and for determining the flow rate of solid contaminants in oil and gas pipelines using real-time Tera Hertz (THz) imaging is disclosed. A THz imaging device for real-time multiphase flow measurement comprises a THz imaging subsystem having a THz source and an imaging capturing a captured image. Wherein the imaging having at least a two dimensional array of pixels, wherein the multiphase flow may comprise at least one of oil, water, gas and solid contaminants. Further, a method for real-time measurement of a wet gas flow of a gas is disclosed. The flow of gas comprising at least one of a fluid phase or solid contaminants in the gas flow. The method comprises at least the steps of using a THz subsystem on the gas flow to acquire a captured image and further processing the captured image to determine the flow rate of the flow of gas.

Abstract: The present invention proposes a demodulator device, a receiver and a demodulation method for M-ary amplitude shift keying systems (MASK) that requires partial knowledge of the CSI, namely, the channel attenuation coefficient. Therefore, the new demodulator, receiver and demodulation method do not require the knowledge of the channel phase shift. Consequently, no complicated channel estimation techniques are required, and the system will be very robust to the system impairments such as phase noise, I-Q imbalance, etc. In this sense, the new technique is denoted as semi-coherent demodulation (SCD). To reduce the complexity of the new SCD, a suboptimal demodulator is derived which has much lower complexity than the optimal while providing almost the same error probability.

The metal layers may include a composition comprising at least one metal, the at least one metal selected from the group consisting of ruthenium, titanium, manganese, vanadium, iron, tin, cobalt and nickel. Optionally, each of the additional metal layers may be applied using atomic layering deposition (ALD).
