Abstract:
A method and apparatus for increasing the depth of focus of the human eye is comprised of a lens body, an optic in the lens body configured to produce light interference, and a pinhole-like optical aperture substantially in the center of the optic. The optic may be configured to produce light scattering or composed of a light reflective material. Alternatively, the optic may increase the depth of focus via a combination of light interference, light scattering, light reflection and/or light absorption. The optic may also be configured as a series of concentric circles, a weave, a pattern of particles, or a pattern of curvatures. One method involves screening a patient for an ophthalmic lens using a pinhole screening device in the lens to increase the patient's depth of focus. Another method comprises surgically implanting a mask in the patient's eye to increase the depth of focus.
Abstract:
A persistent object for online activities is described. In an implementation, a method is described in which a persistent object is created which references a plurality of clients for participation in an online activity over a network. The persistent object is stored to be callable by at least one of the client for initiating the online activity and causing a notification to be formed for communication over the network to each of the other clients to participate in the online activity.
Abstract:
The present invention is a generic public key infrastructure (PKI) framework. A generic PKI framework can include a PKI adapter coupled to a plurality of different PKI certificate authorities (CAs). The PKI adapter can include program code enabled to select a particular one of the different PKI CAs based upon provided request criteria. Also, the generic PKI framework can include a PKI connector coupled to the PKI adapter. The PKI connector can include program code enabled to process requests for certification from PKI clients for respective applications by providing request information from the requests to the PKI adapter.
Abstract:
The present invention provides a method, system, and computer program product for transparent on-demand certificate provisioning for secure email. The method comprises: generating a keypair and a self-signed certificate; requesting a certificate from a certification authority; temporarily securing email using the self-signed certificate; and securing email using the requested certificate, after receipt of the requested certificate from the certification authority. The present inventions uses self-signed certificates as an initial, interim security mechanism, provides automatic submission of certificate requests and renewal requests, provides an administrative policy to specify when keypairs and self-signed certificates are generated by a user's client system, and when certificate requests are submitted, and provides automatic transition from end-user defined trust to delegated trust based upon CA-issued certificates.
Abstract:
Methods and apparatus are disclosed for detecting solar cell defects by applying a forward-biasing electric current through a silicon solar cell or a group of interconnected solar cells for a short duration and then analyzing the resulting thermal image of each cell with an infrared (IR) camera. The invention is particularly useful in assembling solar cell arrays or modules in which large numbers of cells are to be wired together. Automated module assemblers are disclosed in which the cells (or strings of cells) are tested for defects prior to final module assembly.
Abstract:
A method and system are disclosed for segmenting a population, and include the defining of a base level population segmentation tree. A set of alternative level variables usable as substitutes in the nodes of the population segmentation tree are defined. Substitute split values for each node of the tree are determined to enable up and down shifting between levels.
Abstract:
In one embodiment a gaitor interface may be used to connect a gaitor to many different types of footwear. The gaitor interface provides a removable attachment between the gaitor and the shoe. One part of the gaitor interface comprises a track that can be mounted along the exterior of the shoe. The track includes a pair of elongated arms that define an interior flex track. Another part of the gaitor interface comprises a connector for attaching to the track. The connector has a bead portion that can be slid into the flex track. The interlock between the bead portion and the flex track provides a releasably secure connection between the gaitor and the shoe. In another embodiment, a convertible shoe having a removable shoe collar is provided. The removable collar may be reversible and may have different linings or covering for the inner and outer surfaces.
Abstract:
A learning device is disclosed having both a textbook of substantially conventional format and an electronic storage medium to be accessed through a computing device external to the textbook. At least one of the pages or binding of the textbook may include a transmitter which, upon positive actuation by the user, causes a signal to be generated and transmitted to a receiver of the computing device. Upon receipt of the signal, the computing device accesses and displays the additional information stored on the electronic storage medium. The electronically stored information may be accessible through a stand-alone computing device, a server, a web page, or the like. In so doing, the textbook and electronic media can be used in concert with movement between the two resources being seamless to the user.
Abstract:
Systems and techniques are described for providing lighting. In general, in one implementation, the lighting includes an incandescent and a substantially monochromatic light emitting diode light source. When energized, both of the light sources emit a peak wavelength of light that is visible to human beings. The monochromatic light source can emit a wavelength of light that is not visible to a specified animal species.
Abstract:
Provided are in vivo screening methods to detect and identify substances that affect neuronal viability, and/or prevent neurodegeneration, and/or confer neuroprotective effects The screening methods utilize recombinant C. elegans expressing a detectable marker in neuronal sub-groups and the use of neurotoxins specific to specific neuronal cells. Also provided are methods for identifying modulators of neurotransmitter transporters such as the dopamine transporter. Therefore, the invention provides methods for identifying substances that can be used in the prevention and therapy of neurodegenerative diseases.
