    Abstract: A multibeam backlight and multiview display employ a filling fraction of a diffraction grating to control diffractive scattering efficiency. The multibeam backlight includes a light guide configured to guide light and a plurality of multibeam elements, a multibeam element of the multibeam element plurality including a diffraction grating. The multibeam element is configured to diffractively scatter a portion of the guided light out of the light guide as directional light beams having different directions corresponding to different view directions of a multiview display. A filling fraction of diffractive features within the diffraction grating is configured to control a diffractive scattering efficiency of the multibeam element. The multiview display further includes an array of light valves configured to modulate the directional light beams to provide a multiview image. The filling fraction may be a ratio of diffractive features to filling features within the diffraction grating.

    Abstract: An adaptive background multiview image display system and method provides improved multiview image quality. Systems and methods may involve generating crosstalk data that reduces crosstalk between a first view of subject image and a second view of the subject image. The subject image may be a multiview image to be overlaid on a background image. A crosstalk violation may be detected in the subject image based on the crosstalk data. At least one of a color value or a brightness value of the background image is determined according to a degree of the crosstalk violation to generate the background image. The subject image may then be overlaid on the generated background image.

    Abstract: A method of aligning a multiview backlight with a light valve array of a multiview display employs an alignment pattern that includes unit cells spaced apart from one another and having view blocks corresponding to different views of the multiview display. The method of aligning includes establishing the alignment pattern on the light valve array, illuminating the light valve array using the multiview backlight to display the alignment pattern, and adjusting a relative position of the multiview backlight and the light valve array to minimize an error measure of the unit cells within the displayed alignment pattern. A multiview display backlight alignment system includes the multiview display and a positioning stage configured to adjust the relative position to minimize the error measure. An automated multiview display backlight alignment system further includes a feedback controller, the positioning stage being motorized.
